"fixing" warped records
View this Thread in Original format

Well i just got a shipment of records in from Plantxusa, and all of them are slightly warped.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any good methods to fix the problem. Would it be a good idea to lay them on a table and put a book or some sort of weight ontop to even out the bend? should i warm them up first? if so how warm.
thanks for any tips.

i have a similar problem with a few records, and as a result, i've only been able to mix one side of them as the other side just slides about like god knows what on the turntable and you can't cue it up right.

anybody got anyideas? i dont want to damage the records so i've never tried anything :S

I just made a post similar to this one...

A friend on mine told me that if you slightly warm the record up,,, and then cover it with some wieght it will help fix them,,, although I think you should wait to hear what some other people have to say about this because I've never tried it.

Looks like it would make beatmatching kinda difficult.

The method i was always told about was to get two pieces of glass cut into squares about 13" x 13". Put the vinyl inbetween them like a sandwich and then put them somewhere slightly above room temperature. Like if you have a cupboard with a hot water system in it, then put it in here, or some people say to put it in the oven at like 35 degrees (95 for the yanks) for a bit and then leave it in the shade to cool down with a big book on top, still wedged between the glass plates.

Never been game to try it myself

For me a good old stack of records piled on top of it does the trick. But I have only had some mildly warped records to fix.

just bend them, simple and it worxx:D

i got this tip from someone else on TA.. and i tried it out.. it worx perfectly:)

stick it between two pieces of glass and put it on top of the fridge. It will eventually form back to it's shape :)

either that or shove it at the bottom of a pile of other records, but it needs to be hefty, say about 50.

I myself use the bending method (being a cheap and lazy bastard) and it works fine, for the most part. The 'method' is to slowly pull down on both sides, while holding your thumbs in the centre to counterbalance the force from the other fingers, then rotate the record and repeat. If the record is warped in one specific region, focus on that area rather than do the full go-around. Put on mild pressure for longer duration, rather than higher pressure for a shorter duration. About 30 degrees of bend should be o.k.

Don't overdo it, however - vinyl CAN and WILL snap if you exert too much pressure or bend it too far (45 degrees on both sides and it will snap for sure) - happened to me once, unfortunately, when I was careless and impatient (it was very fast - scared the out of me, too - *snap* and the pieces went flying out of my hands! In the middle of a set, to boot!). It was one of my favourites too. :(

I fix all my warped records by bending them. it only takes a minute.
