Brainstorming: What do you want in a club night?

Alright TA's, finally a thread where im not advertising myself ;) (ignore my signature :p)
So we've all been reading how well everyone can complain about what was wrong with whatever event they attended, what sucked about it, yadda yadda yadda
Well now is your chance to say what YOU want when you go out to a an event, whether it be a clubnight, rave, one-off night at a club, etc. etc.
What would make you, the Toronto TA's, come out and support a trance event in the city?
Is it the venue? Sound? Lighting? General atmosphere? Price? Big Name DJs? 19+/all-ages? Cheap Drinks? Crowd? Women/men? Hype around an event/club? Because your friends are going?...or anything else ive missed
What suggestions do you have in an attempt to revive the dying trance scene in toronto?
And im not looking for the whole bullting, wishful thinking type of answers that result in the one thing being said, but another action being made. Answer truthfully. So if an all local night couldn't bring you away from say the guv (for example, or whatever your usual night is) then say so truthfully.
The only way something like this could work is if people are truthful and follow through with support if they say they will, otherwise it results in flopped events. |

Alright let's see,
In the period of a month (give or take) Toronto has seen....
- Picotto
- Sasha
- Digweed
- Guy Ornadel
- Tall 2XLC
- Tiesto
- Hawtin and Sven Vath
Anybody else think the trance scene in Toronto is dying? |
|
|
| Rev. Paroxyzm |
Nope!
Trance is not dying.
It's just that Techno is getting stronger
and well... Jungle is stagnating. Wait! it's been stagnant for 4 years.

- Picotto

these are Techno DJ's
Better say in the last 2 months or so, we've had:
BINARY FINARY
TRANSA
LAB 4
LOU CYPHER PROJECT |
|
|
| Kid Lax |
okay well maybe dying was the wrong word
regardless this isn't what this thread is about
this is about expressing your opinions and your ideas regarding what it would take to gain your support |

we'll take these events for example
binary finary & transa both pretty much bombed
why?
what was so unappealing about either event?
lab 4 & lou cypher project were both at nightmare (i think), and i believe it did really well. why? well i think it was just because it was a nightmare party and it has a lot of supporters, regardless of the dj's.
so what could've either the transa or binary finary party have done to make their night better?
for those of you who didn't go...why didn't you go? what could've made you attend? |

so you're saying for you its all about the big name djs?
that's perfectly understandable and pretty logical
would a night of local talent spinning the same tracks as these djs gain your support?
or is it just...go big or go home? |

Hmm, let's start with Sound, Lightning, General Atmosphere, Price, DJs don't really matter as long as they're ripping the place apart (but big name DJs don't hurt either), 19+ definitely, cheap drinks are a definite plus, crowd (in my case, I'd prefer seeing some more women, more friendly and relaxed women!), hype really doesn't matter to me but it seems to draw more people :D, and yeah, without my friends no party is good enough...
So basically, everything you've listed should be taken into consideration. Once you cover most of those points, you've got yourself an event and a half! |

i was at transa, so i'll comment on that (though i can't say anything about b.finary).
imo, transa wasn't very great overall simply because of the whole "live" formula, which isn't really live at all. for those who were there, you know what i mean. :p
furthermore, they were pretty much showcasing their new album "Chronology", they weren't "spinning" a set at all - they didn't even mix between songs, just let them die, and start the next one. the songs themselves were ok, some pretty original (as well as some classics - supernova was a blast, as usual). but not the standard club night set, you know.
personally, i enjoyed the other dj's more than i did transa (even though cafe del marco was to be heard twice during the night - which, hey, is f'ing awesome in my book! :D :eyespop: )

i will try to answer this from my point of view, so this is all just my opinion.
the venue makes a big effect - i like to see downtown events, just because i like downtown :D also it's more convenient to get there rather than to viva (for me). so to extend this generally, i would say the venue matters in terms of convenience of location. another factor is reputation, though not as important imo. the guv has a reputation (good or bad depends on who you ask :p ), but a "reputation" might not always be good, because the more well-known a club is, the greater the danger of commercialization.
the sound is a huge huge huge factor!!! the perfect sound system - imo - is one where
a) it's loud (duh!), but
b) not loud enough so that you can't talk to people, not even while yelling! (hint: guv)
c) the sound is clear, and you can hear everything - that is, the bass isn't overpowering. but the bass still must be very strong (turbo had this down pat on that transa night), but not farting (hint: guv!). at the guv, you can't really hear the full details of the music, mostly farting bass (especially the main room - the kool haus is usually a little better). i personally don't like THAT much bass.
lighting is a must-have, for sure. especially if you're tripping out. cool lasers are a definite requirement!! :p smoke is cool too, but not when overdone.
ok i'll just hurry it up, this is getting tedious (lol). general atmosphere - if you mean the "vibe", then obviously this is THE greatest thing that will make or break your club night. likewise, i prefer non-hyped events, because hype tends to draw ginos ;) . NOT super-expensive drinks/refreshments is a huge bonus. if i'm dead tired in the course of the night, and/or parched, some fruit or drinks will definitely keep me going. the lack of refreshments (or a huge price tag) will make me call it quits earlier than i would like to. of course, if the dj is just THAT good, that is, to make me transcend the petty needs of the body through the music - well, damn, i'll stay 'till the end.
19+ for sure, to avoid the Candy Kid Raver Syndrome.
the biggest thing, though, is the DJ and the MUSIC. i must say that hearing the same uplifting formula can get tiring, so armin and ferry night after night (or similar style) would not be good at all. variety is key! hard trance should be a staple for sure. there should be prog in there too, and definitely psy/goa late in the night for maximum effetiveness!! (i love it)
well that was way overdrawn and totally more than i expected i would type. if i missed something i'll add it in later. |

amm all ages .. as i hear suck and so i dont think all age is good but then what about the 18 year olds and 17 year olds that are there for the muzik and not the booty..
so really it's a tough call
HARD trance dj's would be great.. or any djs from europe that would be willing to come... to see the gatecrasher growed would be great..
drinks i supose a reasonable price.. like cans 1 buck and beer i dont know how much beer goes for so i cant say.. but ya... just so it's not as expenseive as it is at the gov.. (so i hear)
good lighting.. like nice pumping lazers.. would be fun 50/50 men women ratio is fine even thoe i know guys would say more chicks.. but still come one.. we need some fun just as much ..
having a dress code.. would be nice..
can you have a line saying NO gino's allowed..? lol sorry but i had to put that in..
but ya.. right now i dont know i should get into the clubing scene first.. then i could ilaborate.. |

I remember asking this question to a girl at Guv a while ago.
She said that an awsome clubbing experience would be if every single person at the club was on xtc.
It would be something like..

* Size. For me it's either a 10,000+ people party or 500 people party. In other words either very intimate, or really huge.
* Temperature. Even the best night ever will suck if the temperature is too hot.
* Lazers. Love them! Need them! But not cheap lazers like at System Sound bar. I'm talking about lazers at Guv or Viva. Cheap lazers are worse than no lazers.
* Friends. No party is complete without people who you care about and who care about you. Nothing beats seeing a smile of true happiness on a friend's face when you are both enjoying some track.
* Girls. No need to explain that one. I think everyone would agree that dancing next to a girl whom you like(even just as a friend) is very very enjoyable.
* Drugs. Hm.. That one is controversial. Sometimes it's even better to dance without those, but it definitely enhances the experience :D Moderation is the key.
* And last but not the least: Music. Doesn't even have to be the best DJ - as long as the music being played is what I like, I'll enjoy it. Seeing the DJ dancing and enjoying his own tunes behind the DJ booth is a definite plus. |
