Why so many disses Sony's MDRV700 DJ headphones??????

| actually i have had mine for a little over 2 years and it still looks new and it has been plugged and unplugged so so many times into various headphones jacks and the sound quality of it sounds as good and clear as day one. the stucture of it for me is tough and it shows since it has been so many uses and abuse. i remember this one idiot i let him borrow my heapohes and i saw him abusing and twisting it on his set and it didn't do anything to the headphones. i love tis thing cause it looks better than the pioneers 1000 and the quality is top notch. your take? |

| yea i've had these a while too and they have suprisingly not broken on me. Sound quality is still top notch :) |

| If you own (or have bought or are buying) the Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones, check the swivel joints every now and then. It's those thin, flimsy, brittle plastic covers on those joints that are prone to cracking after just a few months of use - and the only way to fix those cracks is to send the headphones back to Sony to replace the entire headband (you guessed it, the swivel covers are part of the headband assembly), at a cost of about $40 plus tax and shipping and a loss of use of the headphones for 3 to 4 weeks. (Sorry, DJ's, but those cracks are NOT covered at all by Sony's warranty - but then again, Sony's 1-year parts/90-day labor warranty covers only factory defects.) |

I think I know why I thought the Sony MDR-V700DJ lacked really deep bass:
I was using the V700 only on a portable CD player - and a gutless Sony CD Walkman, at that - at the time that I had owned that 'phone! HAH! That's because the V700 is notorious for requiring a lot of headphone-output current capability just to get any real bass extension, due to its very low 24-ohm impedance rating. (The V900 and the 7509 suffer from the very same problem as the V700, as far as extracting usable deep-bass from portable players is concerned.) And on portables, I've actually heard better deep-bass extension from relatively high-impedance headphones than I did from any very-low-impedance headphones.
So, I'm concluding that the V700 is a poor choice for use with gutless portable players (despite its extremely high efficiency), not only due to the extremely high current requirement of that 'phone for it to produce any low bass whatsoever, but also because the built-in op-amp inside the average "long-battery-life" portable music player lacks anywhere near sufficient current-delivery capability to reproduce that oomph. As a result, the portable player's built-in op-amp will run out of current, and the resulting sound from the V700/portable-player combo will be hollow and lifeless. (Like, that boomy mid-bass hump will diminish - but what is happening to the rest of my bass, as well? :eek: ) The V700 really needs an amp in order to get the impact that those 'phones are famous (or notorious) for! (Likewise, most of the higher-end Sony headphones require an amp in order to sound their best, despite their extremely high efficiency.) And even with an amp, the rest of the sound from the V700 is mediocre. :p |

I have the Pioneer HDJ1000 and the Sony 700,,, both are great head phones but I like the Pioneer better. I think they look pretty much the same,,, but the Pioneer looks way better (on me at least) and feels tighter IMO. I bought the Pioneer after letting everyone at my club night use my Sonys,,, only to realize that they were cracked on both sides:mad: :whip: :mad: :whip: So I decided to get the Pioneer to avoid another problem like this with the Sony in the future,,, I guess only time will tell if the Pioneer is as durable,,, but I think the bass sounds much nicer in the HDJ1000 ;-)
Whatever,,, they're almost the same,,, just don't let any fools use your Sony and u will be okay :stongue: :haha: |

I think it's cool that the Pioneer has a switch to turn the sound from Stereo to Mono,,, because you never know when that might need it ;-) |

Actually I think they are - mine cracked on both sides, and I sent them in - the entire headband was replaced, for free. They were still under 1-year warranty.
As for your concern, Aldrian, ShadySlim pretty much answered it. The brittle quality of the plastic is to blame. I'm surprised that yours haven't cracked yet, but they will.

Everyone always disses them because the tend to crack/break
almost every single dj i know who has had them has cracked them
thats one reason i bought Pioneer's...because they are for heavy duty dj use |

If you have sony 700's and the swivel joint starts to crack then all you need to o it get a clear zap strap and tighten it up around the joint.
I sent my headphones away to be fixed and it cost me 90 buxs, a year later they broke again and i just used a zap strap on them, works fine. |

When I drop $100 on a pair of headphones, I god damn well expect them to last longer than a year like yours did. My old v700's lasted for just over a year despite immaculate care for them. Not to mention they start making my outer ear ache after more than 30 minutes of wearing them, and the leather ear cup thing will dry up and begin to crack. You might as well pay someone the $100 to you in the ass with a broken broomstick :whip: |
