Maaz - that article is written that way because it's in the Daily Telegraph - which is a conservative newspaper. The Conservatives are the opposition party, the party in government is Labour. The Daily Telegraph are just trying to make the government look bad. |
It all makes sense now, thanks :) But I thought they couldn't write it without anything to prove it :p |

Well in this case they haven’t lied - just used the statistics in a certain way. By their method you would say someone who has shoplifted 10 times is worse than someone who has murdered 9 people.
If you take a look at American news programs - in the summer 2001 (before the New York attacks) they had nothing to report on (nothing that directly effected their inward looking country anyway) - so they made up some story about 'the summer of sharks', and despite all the experts saying that shark attacks that year were no more than any other year they still reported every attack and made out that sharks were on some mad murderous rampage.
In the same way, a couple of years before that they also had nothing to report of significance to them (the effect their crippling sanctions were having on Iraq wouldn’t have made fun tv) - so they went into a mad frenzy about 'Britains unsafe streets'. In the typical American hysterical, over exaggerated style of reporting they had video clips and UK correspondents talking about how unsafe Britain was. They used a statistic that said that there were marginally more assaults per 1,000 people in the UK than in the US. They of course neglected to mention that 7 times more people per 1,000 are murdered in America. What they said wasn’t lying as such - they never made up statistics, they just misled people and left parts of the truth out.
