i haven't added anything to my computer in about 6 months, so im a little out of the loop. i need a new video card (geforce2pro is dying) and maybe a scanner. im lookin to spend around $100-$120 on a video card, and around $150 on the scanner. initial reaction is to go for a geforce3 ti500, and some hp scanner. ideas ??

thanks

if you have the spare £££ or $$$ consider getin more ram as thats always a good upgrade too (unless u have a gig of the stuff!)

geforce 4 OMG!! :eyes:

But when I first saw it I was like WTF? is that a motherboard with a processor :p . It's freaking huge!!

For a scanner I'd recommend a Cannon, sth like the Lide 30. They perform excellently & look gorgeous as well. For a graphics card I'd recommend a GF4Ti 4200 128 MB RAM, though it is quite a bit more expensive than the amount u seem willing to spend. If u want to look for sth cheaper go for the ATI Radeon 9000. Personally I'd go for the GF but it depends how much of a gamer you are I guess.

being an engin student i dont have much time for gaming anymore. as such i think the gf4 or gf-fx are out my 'reasonable' range. canon scanner sounds good though.

Either:

1) ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB DDR RETAIL

OR

2) GEFORCE4 TI4200 64MB DDR RETAIL

These cards are ~$120-130 USD.

The Geforce will outperform the Radeon, but the Radeon has more available RAM. There aren't many, if any, current games that can utilize all this RAM. Thus, if you're looking for performance go with the Geforce. If you are willing to fork out an extra ~$20-30 bucks you can get a TI4200 128MB instead.

Stay away from the Geforce3 TI500, this card is dated.

Anyways, make sure you do your research before making your purchases.

Actually I didn't mean it in regard to how much u play, but in what u play. I'm an engineer also & I don't really play that much anymore but since I wanna play games like Unreal Tournament 2003 I have a GF4 Ti & I'm gonna buy a GF FX to play Doom III next year (anyone played the alpha demo ? WICKED!)
Anywayz I'd recommend the ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. Whatever u do stay away from the GF4 MX series. If u have to buy for nVidia buying a GF3 is better than a GF4 MX.

if you want a gf4, and don't need it immediately...wait until after xmas

geforceFX cards should be appearing then, so gf4s should drop some in price :)

yeah, i wouldn't waste money on a gf3 or a gf4 mx...in a couple of months time it won't be able to run anything new :(

i went from a gf4 ti4200 64mb to a 128mb version and haven't noticed much difference with games, tho i haven't had the chance to test doom3 which would have been interesting to see if there are any differences

jinxed84
id say go with a radeon 9000 for the vid card. since you arent gonna be doing games you wont really need it anyway, but it will be decent for most of the stuff you decide to toss at it, with the exception of like Doom 3.

one other thing....get more ram.

and if you really want to you might want to upgrade your processor while youre at it. you can get athlon XPs really cheap now

1900+ $70
2000+ $73
2100+ $86
2200+ $138

cant really go wrong with those prices, and you should notice the difference

oh yes the ram is $109 for 512mb of pc2100
$43 for 256mb <<
prices taken from www.pricewatch.com

happy hunting
