Shared connections/passive mode/sending files

I've had this annoying problem for ages but I've never really tried to do anything about it.

I have two computers networked in my house. This one (where the server is) and the other one which my dad and my brother uses which is upstairs from me. Since I got the shared connection in February this year I have been unable to send files over ICQ/MSN and there's a lot of FTP sites I can't connect to as well.

What I'm asking, is there any way to unshare the connection when the other computer isn't being used and turn it back on when it is? Because I usually share a load of tunes with my ICQ/MSN contacts and what I'm having to do is upload them to webspace and then send the link and delete the file from the space afterwards. It would be so much easier if I could directly send.

I'm running on Windows ME. I've checked my network options and there's like a million different network components there and I'm worried that I'll totally something up if I touch anything. I've not seen the guy that set up the network for a good while so that's why I haven't been able to ask him for any help on it.

Or is there any way around this?
It's been killing me for months.

Cheers for any help.

This maybe down to yr server. A lot of people have problems with this kinda thing, due to their router on their broadband connection.

But u can usually connect to ftps no problem

Sounds like it might be a problem with the way u have setup yr network

Setting up sharing a connection is easy over ME. There is an option to do this on the dial up thingy. Use XP now, but its straight forward.

It talks you through it :D

BUt sounds like u need to re do it. Then all should be good :D
