Question for the Europeans/Australians/Latin Americans etc.

Hello,

I'm doing a research paper on the sociology of electronic dance music and i need your help with something.

As you may know, most Americans call all kinds of electronic music "techno" even if it's not related to that genre.

Does that happen in your country too? Or does the Average Joe have the capability to tell dance genres apart, even if he listens to commercial ?

Is there a difference of understanding among generations? Do your parents call trance techno?

I appreciate any help. Thanks,

Pio

depends really, a few of my friends who go to clubs etc or have been a few times usually can tell the difference between trance, hard nrg & house for example.

people who dont have any idea just call anything electronic "techno"

but if you started talking about progressive, uplifting trance, deep house, progressive house, progressive trance etc they wouldn't know, unless of course they were right into the scene.

hard NRG is VERY big here in melbourne which is unfortunate (for me) as i can't stand it, trance is quite small and only really sees the light of day when we get the tours (GC, GK etc).

That's all i wanted to know. Thanks!

every person ive met or talked to about electronic music has referred to it all as "techno" cept for those who like it themselves, and they can usually tell the diff between diff genres.

thats my experience anyway.

Well...That's true...Americans like to say "Techno" or "Rave Music" (at least thats what I experienced when I was there).

But heh..it aint that different in Germany.
At least average people can differ between TRANCE (under which most understand those 80's cover versions which are very popular here right now :( ) and TECHNO. Too bad no one thinks of PvD here when ppl hear the word "trance" but of those 80's-cover-artists (Groove Coverage, Jan Wayne, Barracuda, Pulsedriver (?)....).

I was in France like more than 5 times (different regions: Paris and South West) and people there call it "TECHNO" too. I remember being in a club and the DJ asked the crowd "do you want to hear techno?" and then he played SAFRI DUO :eyespop: . Weird :p

Austria is prolly the same as Germany concerning Trance :)

I think people in Holland even understand more of trance than here in germany (/me looks @ Jploveparade: maybe you can add your opinion :) ).

I dunno about the UK but I guess it's the same as Holland ?

Thats it :)

unless your in miami where the older people call it "tiki tiki music".
otherwise, to the hip hop crowd, they all call it techno or rave as well. only those who are really into the music and the scene can distinguish between the diffrent genres.

You Got It :D

most of the people call novaspace/dance nation/dj boozy woozy/ and other trance
hardtrance=hardtrance
sometimes dj boozywoozy = hardtrance, hardstyle
and most people never heard of real techno and call all hardtrance/hardstyle techno
MasterP
in israel most people call all the genres that are related to trance
house/trance but that's it
to say progressive or melodic is far beyond them. but i guess it's better than to call everything techno

In the UK we are very very very aware of different genre's. I have to plan a night with my crew back home to account for different peoples tastes.

The main UK genres are
Trance
Hard House
Techno
Breaks
Commercial dance
House
Progressive (all froms too many sub divisions to mention)
UK Garage
Drun n Bass/Jungle
Hip Hop

Those of us who are into these are basically divided into tribes, some severe arguments have occurred over whuch is best or what club we go to.

It's rather quite depressing here. Most people call that really top 40's dancey crap you hear on the radio trance/club music etc or just classify everything as techno. They have really baaaad taste too :whip: :whip:

Only about a dozen of my friends know and can distinguish the various genres.

So many of them pretend they know what they are talking about and begin dropping names. Usually of people who only play commercial radio . It's at this point I put my headphones back on and walk away :)
