| or more specifically, are you tougher if you play in the NFL or NHL??... i 've heard hockey fans say it's hockey because of the scheduel and playoffs etc but players in the NFL are bigger and hit more frequently head on... it's a close call... i've heard this debate plenty... what do you think? |

| I think football is rougher. i see what ur saying with the regualar football season being 16 games and hockey 82, but there might be games in hockey when u dont even get hit. Football you get hit constantly depending on your position. QBs get sacked, RBs get hit every time they carry the ball(well majority of the time), WRs get hit after catches, and the linemen are extremely physical with each other. how many times have you seen an OL have someone fall on their leg and it get's broken badly. I've played both, and again, i would def go wit football |

You're right about the players being bigger in Football,,, but in hockey you can skate up to someone and start feeding him shots with out getting fined a crazy amount of dollars,,,, so hockey is rougher IMO. |

| I'd say hockey. In football, you get to rest more frequently I find, more time between plays. In hockey the injury potential is higher because the players are going way faster = hit with more momentum. Though lately, hockey hasn't been as rough. The real difference is the 82 games a year plus playoffs to football's 16 a year plus playoffs. |

Obviously you guys have never played rugby union or rugby league .. much rougher than either gridiron or ice hockey..
and the players don't wear 10 layers of padding either.... :) |

| I'd think that football is more physical because there is a potential for injury on every play, while in hockey you probably wont be too bad unless someone does something illegal. |

I Agree!
Neither are rough! too many pads!
Try Rugby, english hockey or proper real football!

Hockey...
The potential for injury is great in both sports...not that is the intent...however, I've skated for 10 years and had my share of stitches from sticks, pucks and skates...not to mention one blown out knee. And the fights are the best...nothing like a little 'positive motivation'...and yeah...it obviously doesn't hurt the opponent beating your fist into their helmet.
I agree that rugby is rough[er] since there is no pads...however, the discipline is different...illeagal tackles ect...the reason for pad development over the years in football and hockey is because of the increase in physical play and subsequent injury (look at the padding of the 40's football...or i should say lack there of)...of course the more padding just makes you hit harder and harder..not necessarily a solvent for the problem.
However, proper football...uhm no...great athelets, fun sport...but a little trip up doesn't deserve rolling around on the ground for 3 minutes. I took my first 24 stitches after i took a puck in the jaw not only after my shift, but after the period. Stick tape is good for more than sticks.
:D
PS...if we are just going to name a random "rough" sport...Irish Hurling and a close second a Rugby Fest with Way too much beer involved :D :D |

ill have to agree with webmeister on the rugby union bit
especially in lower subdivision grades where there arent too many eyes on you. i say damn to fairness!!
ive seen many a player walk off with his fair share of rakes across his back and let me tell you there is not much in the world that feels like studs running down any part of your body and only finding the ones on your back in the shower afterwoods
horah for rugby |
