Latency
View this Thread in Original format
hey cheggy
Is latency determined by the sound card or by the speed of the computer?

Just wondering cos i'm getting an audiophile and I want to know whether or not this will solve my four hour latency problem

4 hour latency ?

wtf...and by the way dude: some infos about your system might be useful too.

But usually latency is an issue of your soundcard.
My Soundblaster PCI had a latency of about 50-60ms I guess.
Today I switched to something more professional.
My TerraTec DMX6fire 24/96 got a latency of 4ms (basically you dont hear latencies from 10 on downwards anymore).

Depending on how many softsynths you wanna use, you also need a good CPU.
hey cheggy
okay, cheers mate.

I was being sarcastic about the four hour thing by the way. It's just very long. I'm still using the crappy built in sound card that came with the computer

What would be the best way to improve latency on this setup?

AMD 650mhz Duron on Asus A7V Motherboard
512mb 133mhz RAM
3 80gig Seagate Baracuda HDDs
SB Live! value soundcard, using kxaudio drivers for ASIO
Evolution MK-249C2 keyboard
Windows 2000

If you are really short on cash, and all you care about is latency, an Audiophile 2496 or other good soundcard will help. If you have a little extra cash, upgrade your CPU as much as you can, too (you might need to get another motherboard).

Cpu determines how many softsynths and effects you can use at once, with out clipping. But you can always record all your melodies percusion loops to wave , to give cpu room if you have a slow computer.

Don't ever get those expensive sound cards, that claim to be better for softsynths. They do nothing but have more dsp effects. wich hogs cpu, wich is what really counts when using softsynths. I farked my self and bought a $600 pro card that works the same as the audiophile :(. When i could of upgrade my pc to a 2.5 ghz
