I'm thinking about getting an external harddrive. Should I consider an Automatic Backup System device or just a regular external harddrive? Also, would you recommend Firewire or USD 2.0 or USB 1.0?

if you want to have some speed you can choose between usb 2.0 and firewire
if you have firewire on your computer and you're gonna use it only @ your computer you can choose firewire
if you have usb 2.0 choose USB 2.0 more people have this so you could take the harddisk to somebody and connect it

Any suggestions on brands? I've seen decent-looking Iomega, Western Digital, and generic products.

i have a maxtor and it works pretty well. and it was relatively cheap. usb2.0 is just as fast as firewire. i got usb 2.0 becuase i can plug it into any other ocmputer with usb1.0 and it will work. more people have usb than firewire so ... yeah

the Addonics ones are pretty decent!
The company where I work has about a dozen of these around the building and none of them ever failed apart from one that had a faulty ventilator

The other big bulky cases from other brands have pretty often sucked .... to much space , to heavy, unreliable for hardcore usage .

you have to understand that were I work hard drive failures are not uncomon cause the stuff gets severily put to the test running 24 7 with a gigabit network and so on .......

I give thumbs up for Addonics casings!
