It is possible to do this with "ogglame --mp3input", but apparently it's not worth the effort:

You can convert any audio format to Ogg Vorbis. However, converting from one lossy format, like MP3, to another lossy format, like Vorbis, is generally a bad idea. Both MP3 and Vorbis encoders achieve high compression ratios by throwing away parts of the audio waveform that you probably won't hear. However, the MP3 and Vorbis codecs are very different, so they each will throw away different parts of the audio, although there certainly is some overlap. Converting a MP3 to Vorbis involves decoding the MP3 file back to an uncompressed format, like WAV, and recompressing it using the Ogg Vorbis encoder. The decoded MP3 will be missing the parts of the original audio that the MP3 encoder chose to discard. The Ogg Vorbis encoder will then discard other audio components when it compresses the data. At best, the result will be an Ogg file that sounds the same as your original MP3, but it is most likely that the resulting file will sound worse than your original MP3. In no case will you get a file that sounds better than the original MP3.

Since many music players can play both MP3 and Ogg files, there is no reason that you should have to switch all of your files to one format or the other. If you like Ogg Vorbis, then we would encourage you to use it when you encode from original, lossless audio sources (like CDs). When encoding from originals, you will find that you can make Ogg files that are both smaller and better quality than MP3.

Alright well I guess I'll have to be the official TA authority on OGG Vorbis since a good chunk of my music collection is ogg.

Ogg vorbis is a next generation, open source, audio format. It provides superior compression to mp3 and yields far better audio quality. It is natively supported in all recent versions of winamp and the open source audio player "zinf" as well as many other lesser known audio players.

Basically when encoding to ogg you have some options, either make the filesize about the same as an mp3 of the same length of time (when ripping from cd) and get a MUCH better sounding file, or if you're like me and 192 kbps mp3's take up a bit too much space sometimes, you can encode them to a smaller size and have no loss in quality.

Now first off I will recommend that if you want to convert mp3 to ogg that you do NOT convert anything less than 160 kbps from mp3 to ogg. I have found that the conversion of a 128 kbps mp3 to ogg can result in the sound cutting out from the right channel. Secondly, I would HIGHLY recommend a program called audio conversion wizard, I believe created by a company called litex media. You can do batch encodes from MP3 to OGG and it does a wonderful job. (Just make sure to *UN-CHECK* the write id3 tag)

I would recommend ripping from cd or converting from 192 kbps mp3 into an ogg with a quality value of 4 (Ogg quality is selected as a "quality" value out of 10, with a 128 kbps mp3 being comparable to a quality value of somewhere around 3 or 2.5 ;-) This quality level yields GREAT sound from cd's and good compression rates over existing mp3's.

Why choose ogg over your standard mp3's? Well if you just don't seem to have enough space for loads of decent quality tunes, there's a definite advantage to switching to ogg. Convering 192 kbps mp3's to ogg, and especially ripping directly from cd to wav then compressing to ogg (using a program like Exact Audio Copy, www.exactaudiocopy.de ) results in not only a smaller file, but in the case of ripping from cd, a much cleaner sounding file.

Also, ogg IS catching on, because it has no licensing fees and it's superior quality to WMA, and mp3PRO. If you'd like to hear ogg stuff just hop onto EMC and drop me a line as to my recommendations ;-)

If you've got any questions feel free to ask me I can probably help you out if you're really interested ;-)

just download the DBPowerAmp Music Converter @ www.dbpoweramp.com and get the .ogg-codec
it's just that simple;)

All versions of WinAmp beyond 2.80 support OGG Vorbis fully. So don't moan and just download an update. :D

Could somebody who is in the know please post a list of some of the best OGG Vorbis encoders and mp3->ogg converters for the general public to admire please? Thank you.
