When artists such as Tiesto, AVB, Blank and Jones, etc...make their tunes would they use preset instruments
and then make slight adjustments to the sound?
(i.e in a vsti you can select piano, synth, drums....).
I ask this because whenever I try to make my own sounds in programs such as Pro52, Beast and so on the sounds
usually turn out pretty bad,
also I can never make a drum sound with a synth without using a preset. Is a tune any less good if it was made using a preset sound?
Another totally different question. I read on another post that a lot of remixes are made by reconstructing the tune
note by note (the main melody that is).
Is this true? I find it difficult to believe artists such as Tiesto and AVB would have both the time and musical knowhow to do this,
maybe I am wrong but I would have thought that they would use either a midi file or simply rip the required sections of a tune
through a sampler of some sort.
This however becomes unstuck when you consider that Tiesto did an unauthorized remix of Madonna's Die Another Day,
surely threy would not have given him the midi.

Probably for some sounds they do this. For some they may make them from scratch.

The longer you mess with a synth, the more familiar you will be with how to make it produce the sounds you want. Just because you can't make it produce anything good (if you are anything like me, you just twiddle the settings/knobs until a change sounds halfway decent :)).

Depends... some presets will sound very good, some will suck. Another problem with using a preset (aside from it perhaps sucking) is that it will be instantly recognizable to other producers, and your music will likely be criticized for that. :) This seems silly to me (after all, no one criticizes people for using the same violin as so-and-so...), but that's the way it is.

Yes, this is one way of doing it.

Don't underestimate the musical knowhow of DJs... especially those like Tiesto who have bee producing/remixing for years and years. Besides, it doesn't take a whole lot of musical knowhow to do this. If you can't recognize the notes themselves, you can just plug different notes in until it sounds right.

Often the producer will give the remixer the original channels, so there is no need to rip anything or use a midi file or whatever.

For an unauthorized remix, he likely did what you mentioned above: essentially rewrote the music. I have no idea how he did the vocals, I haven't heard the remix yet. Maybe Madonna sings the vocals he used with no other sounds present, and he just used that? Dunno. |

Everyone who've had music lessons for a few years can recognize and play back every trance tune they hear so I suppose Ti�sto and AvB can do that too. |
