wells my dad was telling me about this article he read in the Scar mirror the other day about a new proposed LRT (Light Rail Transit), much like the Scarborough RT, to run from Highway 7 in Markham north/south to the new Don Mills subway station on the Sheppard line. The line would be constructed over a period of 3 years and contain stops in between..

anyways, just wondering if anyone else knows/heard about this .. ? i'm gonna keep searching for the article and post it if i find it..

and in other related transit news, which might be of more importance to some people, here are some subway extensions..

All they need to do is extend this line to Peterborough and i will be happy :D

this won't happen in a while
ttc can't afford it
toronto can't afford it
and even though the transit expansion is a damn good idea for the east side
markham can't afford it
its already technically expanded its lines but since everyone in markham has already been used to driving their cars (including me) the buses that i normally see only have 1 or 2 ppl on them
takes time to change
and normally these expansion lines are only created if there is demand

yep...not for a couple years will this idea come to bloom. Not enough demand. AAzn brought up a good point, that most ppl in Markham are used to arrange rides or having a ride for themselves. Even looking in my area..public transportation isnt that popular WITHIN Markham/Richmond Hill/Vaughan area. Although this would be a good idea, they dont have the funds to do this...TTC is still hounding the Government for more funds.

One of the main reasons why the transit system has not been expanded into the 905 region is because of urban sprawl. Urban sprawl being the generation a low density living areas. For a transit system to be financialy viable a high population density (such as in Toronto) is required, or else the system will not break even.

Urban sprawl promotes the use of the automobile, actually it forces you to use the automobile. This is also a major environmental concern since more cars equals more polution.

wells.. that Markham LRT is already on the table .. which means it's in the works like it or not. and with regards to the subway extensions, there was another article put out that the budget board of TO voted unanimously to extending it to STC in the EAst.. and to York uni in the north. honestly they would have to, or the existing extensions they just built won't be as profitable. There was a census put out not too long ago that basically said that there were more ppl living in the 905 region now than in the 416. If they don't start building this infastructure now, it's gonna be crazy in like 5-10 years. It already takes me 1 hr 15 mins on my old route to get to school by TTC and i'm travelling within TO !
