Newcastle in Australia? (pg. 4)

Man Utd is a massive game for any European side, and to give you an idea, Barcelona police estimated there were 4,000 Newcastle fans there when we played about a month ago. Panathinaikos is probably a bigger club for Greece than Newcastle is for England.
My point is not only that many other supporters tend not to travel in so many numbers, but that their presence is never obvious until maybe matchday, and even then they usually keep a low profile until they're actually at the ground. I don't blame them, if you walked the streets of any British city insulting the local fans people would go mental because it is like the national religion. If Panathinaikos ever come to the Toon I wouldn't expect to see a Greek 'invasion' where there are just Greek shirts in every street of Newcastle city centre and all I can hear for a week is greeks chanting and drinking throughout the city. I've never seen that here.
I think the last time England and Greece met in 2001 about 500 English hooligans were banned from travelling to Athens. I imagine English and Greek fans would probably be a pretty violent situation if it was in a 'neutral' territory, but using weapons tends to give nations a bad reputation. Look at Turkey, it seems every football fan in Europe wants a piece of them. |

| haha i was just watchin the world game on sbs and they were talkin about crowd violence. the teams involved were sydney olympic and your australian favourite, newcastle united. it was all started by the olympic though, who IMO are a bunch of fagots and i dont even follow australian soccer. one newcastle united supporter was hospitalised after a suspected broken jaw...a poor effort for a brawl |

So what is the crowd control like in Australian football (soccer)?
Is it really lax like Eastern Europe where you can take flares/fireworks etc into the ground, or have they banned that (like England)? |

Flares/fireworks are prob not allowed but somehow the fans get away with it, and the clubs end up getting fined.
As previously stated in this thread, the football authorities havent even heard of crowd segregation in stadiums, Which I think should be done, not only does it prevents violence, but ot creates a better atmosphere and moderated tension. |

When somebody gets killed you'll be surprised how suddenly eager they become to segregate crowds! Most countries are the same though, they will ignore a problem until it is too late, the public get ouraged, then they step up security tenfold to everyone's inconvenience.
Do people get arrested for taking flares in or do enough people do it that they turn a blind eye? |
