No one I know calls trance techno :conf:

Is it just an american thing ?
XxremedyxX
Yes its basically an american thing or just someone who doesn't listen to trance and the general term for electronic music is techno to them.

Yeah, pretty much! I have given up on tryin to explain the difference to people, if they actually take the time to ask me questions about it, then I will explain the difference, but if they dont I don't even bother anymore. Just too much of a pain in the ass:(

techno has no melody and there are no techno anthems, lol techno anthems

also its more hardcore of a genre and less mainstream than trance
the differences are huge, its more like blink 182 compared to korn (random pick)

blink 182 being pop, and korn being hard rock although some people say it's nu-metal

Yes. To them, there is no difference between trance and techno, as techno is a catch-all term that encompasses trance, house, breaks, and real techno - any sort of electronic dance music really.

So don't rag on your friends for calling your music techno. Instead, play them some real techno and trance together, in one sitting. They'll immediatly hear the differences between the two. It's really just sub-categorization.

Hell, when I first starting listening to The Crystal Method and The Prodigy (some of my first electronic music), I called it techno. Only later did I realize that it was breaks.

I have to confess, that about two years ago, I didn't realize the difference between the two! :*[

I was one of those ignorant people, unaware of what to call what. And well, oh well. Some people have different interests, and really dont take the time to find out how to differenciate between a seemingly small difference of trance and techno (in their eyes..)

Just my thought.....
TiestoInTheMix
my understanding of "techno" music always was something repetitive, like the old-school psy/goa/deep pop whatever i started out listening to (i can't even classify it, not even now!)

these days, being an experienced tranceaddict, i always laugh at my friends when they mention techno.

one of my friends always used to call trance techno, and i was constantly explaining to him how there are breaks, dnb, techno, etc... he still said "who cares, it's all techno to me".
so i downloaded about 15 tiesto & armin albums to his comp and left him listening to all of them. he was a bit crazy and jumpy afterwards, but he never called trance techno after such treatment.

now, today another buddy of mine, hardcore eminem & rap fan, asked me if i know some good techno songs. so i gave him the names of the most hardcore techno beats :p. too bad, he didn't find them on kazaa, so instead i pointed him to marco v, the first thing that popped in my head.

LOL! sorry for such long & useless post.

In Australia,

alot of trance CDs are called dance

even the albums in record stores are titled and labeled as dance
its just for marketing purposes?

if you listen to it or even just look at the tracklisting on the backcover, its surely isn't dance.

they love to put it in a store titling it as dance. why?
big label on the front of it best dance tunes or wateva

crazy
but techno is techno and hardcore is hardcore
just trance gets mixed up alot :sadgreen:

gets annoying to see un-educated people labeling things incorrectly, i am pretty sure when they released the album they know its trance. but still titling it incorrectly just to sell it.

in that case, it doesnt help educate anyone, and still ppl would never know the differences until they BECOME A TRANCEFREAK! :toocool:

Yes, and it is unbelievably frustrating! Even the music stores label the electronic music section "Techno," because they know the roving American teens don't know the difference between any of the genres. It's a painstaking process to correct the error.

However it is useful as a sort of indicator. If someone calls it trance instead of techno I know they have some basic knowledge of electronic music, usually the the extent of knowing that Tiesto is a DJ, but that's about it.

The term progressive is even an even better indicator. If an American mentions progressive house or progressive trance, I instantly recognize that they are familiar with the scene.

But to all you Europeans, remember that the concept of mainstream trance is as foreign to me as people calling it "techno" is to you.
