I thought I'd share todays surfing adventure with you guys today. Well it all started last night me and my friend heard since the cold front was coming into florida there was gonna be some serious waves head to double over head(5-12ft). So we think to our selves thats gonna be ing awesome. We also knew this coldfronts was gonna be the coldest of the season, well its also the coldest front in the past 6year or something. Knowing this we still wanna go. We got wetsuits which we normaly wear when the air temp is in the 60s. Well today when we wake up at 6am to go the temp is in the 30s. so we decide to sleep in and let it warm up, hoping it will get in the 50s. we leave the house at bout 9am get to the beach bout 9:15. The temp at the beach is 42 degrees. We put on the suits and it realy doesnt feel that bad.. So run down onto the beach and the waves look pretty sick, but the wind is blowing about 20mph to the south created a realy strong current, bout 15knots to the south.. So we stretch out and jump in. Well the water was in the mid 60s soo it didnt feel so bad at first. Well as we begin to paddle out. It gets realy realy realy cold, my ears begin to hurt, it gets a little harder to breathe, and everything above water goes numb. So we get out to the break, and are freezing. I catch the first wave i can and surf in, but i was unable to surf all the way in cuzz my feet got numb when i step out of the water, so i couldnt feel the board under me. and this scared me, so i jumped off the board back in the water and swam in to the shore. the current has taken me bout 1/4 mile down the beach soo now i gotta walk that much further to the car. This is when it realy sucks my fingers go completely numb my feet numb my ears hurt soo bad im getting sick. I then proceed to shower off. Run to my care toss the board in the back turn the car on and the heat up. 5min later i see my friend running to the car, he said he surfed one wave and had the same problems i had. So now we are in the car, are having trouble breathing, cat feel our hands/feet, and im bout to get sick cuzz of my ears. I cant feel the heat on my feet. it takes about 45min of intense heat to start to feel normal. So what i have learned from this experience DONT SURF WHEN ITS THAT COLD, no matter what the waves look like. We didn't think our lungs would stop working, nor did we consider our feet would go numb. 6years of surfing and i have never been so cold in my life. My chest still hurts 4hrs later.
Here is a link to what the beach looks like notice the sky is clouded. |
