I just found this out today. I was standing with Maria, just looking at each other in the old subway on 47th street, at the foot of the escalators. She stopped for a second, looking at the bustling crowd. Then she suddenly looked back at me and got this adorable smile on her face. Her hair was undone from the heavy wind outside and she looked at me like she expected something. Just then she grabbed my coat by the collar and kissed me. It wasn't a usual kiss. We weren't kissing because we were teenagers in hormonal hypertrophy. Nor were we kissing because we were drunk or too wrapped up in late-night liberties. Nor because it was the unstoppable sort of last-stage-of-undress kiss. No, it wasn't that at all. We kissed like it was the last thing that was left. And everyone walked by us like we didn't exist.

After we kissed and I saw her off to her metro, an old man approached me. He told me that there was an old law that had never been voted out in Riverside. I asked him what it was, and he said that it stated that kissing in public was considered illegal, unless you annointed the lips with rosewater.

So this is how it feels to be a criminal.
