i was down the coast for 2 weeks, in jan juc, only came back 2 days ago now. Anyway while up there the jan juc surf lifeguard club (who i'm part of now) where having a funraiser night, anyway they asked me if i would dj there for them. They requested house music for the night, which is fair enough, i was actually expecting them to ask me to play fox fm's hottest 100 all over again, so i considered myself lucky. So yeah the night was banging, everyone was dancing and the general vibe was really good. AS the night got older, i decided to try something new, i began to move to a more darker style of electronic music, i started playing some trance.

Now im not talking boring tunes here, to start off i dropped PvD - for an angel, then moved on to utah saints - lost vagueness (oliver lieb remix) then a little dj tomcraft - lonliness etc.... and slowly but surly, the crowd seemed to thin, and eventually i found myself (no joke) alone playing nu-nrg - dreamland, i was like WTF! what are you guys doing!

i dont know even though it ended up being a great night, that was a real downer for me, i mean it seems like maybe trance just will never be appreciated in australia, and that kinda disapointed me. so yeah i know a good dj is meant to read a crowd, but what kinda crowd doesn't like the trance tunes i played!?

it seems the only time i'll get to spin some trance is at home, i doubt i will ever play it at a party ever again.

felt i had to share that with you guys......

p.s this isn't the first time its happened so that is why i have learnt my lesson

I think the problem lies in that trance n techno all have a distinct electronic sound - sounds that aint live. House incorporates so many live instruments and sounds, that its less 'techy' n appeals to the vast majority as its more like a band. Ah well, at least you tried :)

Been there done that, hopefully it wont happen next time as I wont be spinning trance. ;) :D

I think that most people are of the impression that Trance music is only for people who take drugs ! as we all know Trance means alot more than that, it has the ability to capture emotion like no other music genre can and its vast array of sub-genres only confirms its diversity. I believe that the ordinary individual is afraid of change, which is why many people cannot except electronic music and prefer their good old cheesy radio/house music.

As a seasoned DJ of at least two 21st parties a month for the last two years, the secret is to mix in the great tunes between the commercial sh@t.

ie something along these lines
Fragma - Toca's miracle
Darude - Sandstorm
PVD - For an angel
Ian van Dahl - Castles in the sky
etc

Small quantities is the key. And learn how to mix your pop/house songs into your commercial trance. That will keep everybody on the dance floor. The other key is to minimise songs which have large breakdowns.

The other key is to drink lots of alcohol (which is typically supplied free of charge) so you can stand listening to yourself play Britney and Kylie for the 100th time.
