Cheaper: Korg Electribe EA-1
Mid: Roland Juno 106
Higher: Virus Access B (maybe C)
Highest: Um, I'm going to cry again if I keep looking at these synths that I can't afford...
These are just a few. There are lots more you could get. Go on eBay, look at some synths that are about to end and are in your price range, then check the reviews over at Harmony Central or Sonic State or something to see if they sound any good.
Also read up on synths. Sound Sythesis and Sampling is a very good book if you are willing to shell out some money for reading material. There may also be stuff on the internet (dunno how good) about synths.
And you didn't ask (I don't think), but there are a gazillion threads around about what software to use. Go look at them if you have questions about which software you should use (i.e. before you post asking "Which software is the best???" and get flamed ;)). And don't believe anyone who tells you "Blah blah is the best" or "All the pros use Blah-de-blah." :)
Have fun! |

My advice would be to get the software up and running first, settle in to that and then see what you think you're missing.
I thought I needed a hardware synth so I bought one, but now I've got a powerful computer I prefer working with VSTi synths. |
