Too many labels around?

Well I've been giving it some thought, on the one hand I notice that the number of people that purchase vinyl increases, but on the other hand labels say that these are tough times and many of them are closing down.

I think this is only to prove that there are way too many labels around and despite the increase in demand for 12" many cannot manage to make a profit. Despite of this situation it seems that new labels are opening up all the time and it's becoming very irritating and it's also stupid IMO. I mean why does every single artist gotta have his own label? Very soon every label will have only one artist and that would be the founder :p

Oakenfold has his own label, PvD, Armin, Digweed etc. I mean even PPK have now abandoned Perfecto and have created 'Uplifto' LOLz, Crazy IMHO

I know that the number of dj's is rising, but I actuelly doubt if that means that more people are bying vynil. (mp3's...)

i studied the whole mp3 phenomena in a music business course i did. fact: mp3's does not damage sales of music. its just another media type.. whenever these come out ppl always worry about pirating etc.. ppl said that cassette tapes were damaging the music world.. and later on they found this out to be not true. the true reason why sales are plummeting globally is due to the amount of music about. this means ppl are less likely to be bothered to go to the record shop, thus less sales.

as for too many labels.. im not too sure about this. yes, many artists are setting up their own labels, this is because many peoples ambitions are to have their own label. so when they have the money to do so, they do :) but however i dont think that too many labels is cause for worry, as all these newer labels are always looking for new talent. now i know first hand that talent is not sparse at the moment (u just have to check out the amateur producers forum for that) but its just a question of finding it, and that is down to the new talent itself hehe :)

nah, if there arent loads of lables - some lables get big like positiva and start releasing cheese.

I agree with this part but it really depends on what new talent you can find. If its just you and your label, then you're pretty much out of business. But then if you happen to sign a couple fresh new artists with a good sound then you're in business.

Take Plastic Angel and his label Afterglow for example. He's introduced some great new artists like: Micro Tools, G & M Project, Robert & Jaron, etc. :)

Youre right though, it seems like every artist is setting up his own label these days.

That and a decrease in the amount of music released. Gross sales of RIAA members dropped by almost the exact percent that the volume of music they released did. They think this is because of mp3s? Please.

nah, that one was someone else. Other than that i am not aware of any other dave pearce flaming sigs other than mine. He's not the best mixer and he plays a fair bit of cheese on the radio - and in clubs apparently its anthem after anthem, and his voice is annoying i guess. :)

the supply outweighs the demand. it's simple their isnt enough talent
to substain all these enw labels. I think the reason labels dont like mp3's is because the consumer now can listen to the track @ home in comfort and make a decision rather than listen to it in a record shop and have to choose ina instant.

im all for it and what bs all the magik, vandit & perfecto's of this world should get down on their knee's and thank god mp3's came along because they would be no where as big without them.

bitting the hand that feeds them if you ask me.
Plastic Angel
dont panic... this will not happen that every artist will have his own label.. in that times business and vinylsales have become very
hard... you cant do that profit you did like in years 1993-94-95 96---
but you should know that quality will always have success..
So noone can release in a bad record today because it will become a flop and much money will be lost... so you have to be very careful..
I think in the next 2 years many labels will close and thats good so..
we need quality not quantity.. also the people are getting tired from always the same artists..
90% are liking ferry armin mike and and ... but there are 1000 new talents out there waiting for a guy like me :) t sign them..

so come on guys dont see everything the bad way...

hehe its a vicious cycle.. music, no release because its .. etc etc :) and plastic angel is right, there is LOADS of talent around at the moment, u just gotta search under those rocks :)

I think its because there isn't enough raw talent out there. There's a LOT of people with a little bit of talent with great technology making ok-ish music, but compared to people like Armin and Ferry they're not good enough. And if they can't get one of the big labels to sign them up, why not start your own? Getting noticed these days is SO hard due to the total saturation of the market, so I am not surprised everybody wants to start their own label off just to push their tracks into the world.

Labels are probably too greedy, or are perceived that way. People probably think they can make more money pressing and distributing their own productions. Most people could probably find the money to start their own label up if they had the guts.

For me, the exception to the rule is probably Above & Beyond. Their Anjunabeats label keeps pumping out their own productions, and every one of them is a classic (nearly). But then I love massive uplifting epic trance, and nobody makes that these days. Neo & Farina are probably the newest people on the scene with that sound. Thin, twee, cheesy, boring trance sounding like its made with cheap VSTi's seems to be the depressing state of play in most cases :( Where's that massive sound gone?

But saying that, why should people always go with the big labels - they seem to be signing rubbish like no tomorrow too! I think trance is in a terrible state
