Deck Choosing Problems

I have a budget of around £600 for decks and a mixer. which do you recommend?

I have been looking at Cintronics PD-1 and maybe the stanton SK-5 mixer.

I want to mix trance so scratching decks wouldn't be of much use.

Also, how do you choose your DJ names? I am having great trouble choosing one. My netname is Reborn Phoenix, but i cant think of a way to change this to look good as DJ . DO you think I should start again with a new name?

Heh, I am confoooosed, to much trance probs ;)

I just got into mixing, and I got two Numark TT-100's for ~$500. They're direct drive, but when you switch pitches it has a stretching effect (I don't know the correct term for this).

Dunno about mixers....I got a pretty crappy one (saving up for a nicer one :)

Well if you save up a little more it will be enough for a pair of Technics SL1200MK2 and a cheap-o mixer ... Don't get anything less than technics if you're serious about spinning. Also don't worry about getting a nice mixer to start with ... good decks will take you WAY further than a good mixer. Get something with 2 channels, 3-band EQ per channel and good headphone cueing. I'd recommend either the Behringer DX1000 or the Numark DM1001x.

About the name, Reborn Phoenix sounds good ... don't ruin it by slapping "DJ" in front of it !

Thanks skywalk. How much are technics new? The silver ones look good. Is there anywhere you can get them secondhand?

Yeah, I agree with Skywarp....don't settle for anything less than Technics 1200s. And yes, you can get them used. They have them all the time on Ebay (there's other auction sites that have them too, but ebay seems to always have them)

The technics are your best bet.. unless you can stretch your budget further for the vestax decks.. They're awesome!
InVi
Well, I don't agree

To say, you have to buy the sl series, is quite ridiculous imo.
He hasn't got that much to spend and you make it sound like every other deck set is crap.

I'm about to buy the gemini 2400 and they are not quite as the sl series but they are damnd good! and you can't denie that.

The Gemini decks are allright for bedroom mixing and bedroom quality mix tapes but they simply don't touch Technics sl1200's. The quality is far superior, the pitch control more accurate and smoother, and some clubs still run 1200's that are 20 years old. It really is a case of you get what you pay for. If the decks are for just a bit of fun now and again, then just get some belt drives and save as much as you can (something like the soundlab dlp-1's are decent entry levels) but if you're even slightly serious, save up to get 1200's. They also keep their resale value very well so even if you decide it's not your thing, you will be able to sell them for little or no loss, very easily. As for a mixer, just get a simple 2 channel mixer. Buying a mixer is finding out/deciding what suits your needs, and until you have some experience with various different ones, go for cheap now and buy what is perfect for you, when you know what that is.

I've had my Technics 1200s for about 20 years now and they work just as good as the day I bought them. I had to change the little light once, though.

Get Technics for decks, don't settle for anything else. Save up for them, you will not be sorry. Why buy decks for 600 bucks and a year or two later, buy technics. Just buy the technics to start off.
