i once asked ferry corsten about this and he emailed me back, to build a good set or to make a good mix album, a decent dj should know about the heights of the tunes he would use in the set.
for example, i want to mix these tunes together.
oceanlab - clear blue water (ferry corsten remix)
lange - drifting away (original mix)
above & beyond - far from in love (original nix)
ayumi hamasaki - m (above & beyond remix)
project medusa - moonshine (exor part 2)
rising star - clear blue moon
coast 2 coast - home
i was wondering how i can recogize the each tunes' height. how do i know it? |

| i still don't know what you mean by hieght. |

height being the level of melody in a tune
obviously in building a set you wouldn't put a banging trance anthem with a full blown melody first up.
you want to start things minimal (ie, minimal melody) then work your way up to a full blown melodic peak climax later on in your set.
quite simple really, nothing really technical behind it. |

* plastic boy - silver bath
this is frequently used as a climax tune of a set. i can't use it at the beginning of the set. so the height is tall.
* project medusa - moonshine (exor part 2)
this is frequently used as an intro tune of a set. so its height is short.
To reach the climax from moonshine to silver bath, i need to play other tunes. I cant directly play Silver Bath after Moonshine. So I play these tunes between them.
....
oceanlab - clear blue water (ferry corsten remix)
lange - drifting away (original mix)
above & beyond - far from in love (original nix)
ayumi hamasaki - m (above & beyond remix)
rising star - clear blue moon
coast 2 coast - home
....
The problem is i can't just play these tunes in random order. a super dj like ferry corsten or armin van buuren will arrange these tunes in order to reach the climax. then, how does he arrange them in order? |

| Ok seriously... Stop worring about what Ferry Corsten did and think for yourself. Play the tunes together in a way which flows nicely. Nobody can tell you the proper way to do this because there is no proper way,,, it's all a matter of personal preference. |

I'll do it so:
1.project medusa - moonshine (exor part 2)
2.coast 2 coast - home
3.oceanlab - clear blue water (ferry corsten remix)
4.ayumi hamasaki - m (above & beyond remix)
5.above & beyond - far from in love (original nix)
6.lange - drifting away (original mix)
7.plastic boy - silver bath
8.rising star - clear blue moon

| set building is personal preference, what u think will go well together, what works for you, what u can mix together well, but yes build it up from less epic to more epic, and don't look at ferry or armin as they are not good DJs at doing this, tbh most of the DJs on this board are better technically at building tracklists than mose pro DJs. And if u wanna play silver bath after moonshine, u can, just make sure u keep on building that strongly! only problem with silver bath is that it often sounds empty when u bring it in and doesnt do anything till the break... |
