How to record gigs?

My friend is about to dj at a party this upcoming weekend, what I would like to do is to record the whole show in order to post it on his homepage later.

So my question is, what kind of equipment do we need? Will a ordinary MD recorder do? Where on the mixer do we connect it? Are there MD-discs that can hold a full gig, 3 hours or so? How do we get the corwd sound in there aswell?

Would be really glad if someone could answer this as soon as possible. I guess my dj friend knows where to connect and stuff like that but I just want to make sure everything is done the right way...

Thanks!

well, i only know about recording directly off the mixer. i dont kno how to record the crowd too. (im guessin a regular mic would do, but then the actual music quality might seem pretty bad)

yea, a regular MD player/recorder will do. make sure to set it to the longest record mode. (LP4 i believe)

1. get a rca>1/8th in. jack adapter.
2. hook up the RCA end to the record out of the mixer, and pop the jack into the line in of the MD player.
3. set record mode to LP4.
4. press record.
5. wait 3 hours till the set is done.
6. press stop.

but, there is one thing that u may want to consider. current software wont allow MD players to upload from the player to the computer. the only way to record it on ur computer is to play it thru the headphone out, and hook it up to the line in of your pc, and re-recording the set as mp3. also, you will have to either hack the MD player, or use something like "normalize" in soundforge, because the MD player doesnt have an output that is up to line level. you have to hack it to give it a line out option, or use "normalize" to up the volume to line level.

i have no experiance with any type of mp3 player/recorder, but i would suggest using one of them because it would take the whole "pain in the ass" part out of uploading the mix to ur PC
