k...i just got a new dell (well, its used, but it has a new hard drive and everything and its like 1 year old, 8100 i think) and i really really want stuff from my old gateway's hard drive
any way to install the gateway's hard drive as a secondary in the dell as a way of transferring stuff?
thanks in advance!

It' easy...take the old hard drive out...on the back there should be a power port, and IDE cable port..and a section where there is a jumper. The hard drive itself will tell you which prongs need to be covered by the provided jumper to make the drive a slave. Do as it saqys then connect to the IDE cable and start up the CPU. Or, and even easier way would be to detatch the cable that goes to the CD Rom drive(s) and attach only the hard drive to that IDE cable...it is a secondary port so it will not matter because your HD will be first to start up. They go into "My computer" and both HD's will show and you just copy and paste. -Ryan

Phaze, that *may* work, but you forgot some points..

mezzir, i'd add some tips to Phaze's.

1. Starting the computer and going to windows AND seeing the old hard drive COULD work, depending how the maching was set up. If it's not working, I guess the computer was not set up to re-detect hard drives on the cables when the computer starts. If you don't see your drive in Windows, reboot and get in the BIOS by pressing the right key (usually Delete). I dont know how your BIOS actually works, so read your manuals to get information about [auto]detecting hard drives.

2. It is possible that you plugged the data cable the wrong way. You may also try plugging the cable on your old hard drive on the other side, if there is no small bump in the middle of the plug. (For more information, try to read your motherboard manual if you have it.)
