When The United States first invaded North Africa the French fought the Americans for about 3-4 days killing over 1000 Americans. The French had made an agrement with Hitler to maintain control over southern France as long as they defended it from invasion. The United States invading North Africa was seen as an invasion. An invasion that was meant to liberate France.

Did you know that the American 40th Regiment of Foot killed hundreds of French soldiers in the War of Austrian Succession between 1744 and 1748?

That's funny since America as a country didn't exist until 1776.

I think you'll find, actually, that America did exist prior to 1776, even if the "United States of America" did not. The land mass was called America (just like the continents are still called North and South America today - clever eh?) and the colonies that existed there were called - you guessed it - American colonies. I can only presume that people who lived in these American colonies on the continent of America were called "Americans".

As usual, Izzy, my dates were spot on. ;)

Well actually, on further research, the war of Austrian Succession lasted from 1740 - 1748, and I was actually referring to the 2nd Silesian war (which was one part of the war of Austrian Succession) which did begin in 1744.

It was basically just lots of countries fighting over the right to rule over Austria once Charles VI was succeeded by the Austrian Archduchess:

In all honesty, though, I have no idea what I'm talking about. :D

Why are we bring up old wars to date and compare to what the French did and what we did to them back then just because they refuse to help the US now ? ? ...

Mmmm then the British shouldnt help the US just because The US and yes, the FRENCH and GERMANS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELPED THE USA GET THEIR OWN INDEPENDENCE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! So look at that also .. and because, they bit the crap out of Britain.. Does that COUNT also ?

Bah ing war of ing Austrian Succession
Had to write a paper about it for university so here are some facts:

Charles IV dies.
No male successor
Maria Theresia, his daughter is ready
Spain, Prussia, Russia etc. don't agree and fight
compromise reached in 1948, Austria loses territory in Slesia (today's Poland)
Austria and Prussia share a deeeep hatred
Austria's Hapsburg monarchy thinks about revenge and its foreign minister, Kaunitz, has the great idea of the [s]reversment des alliances[/s] meaning that all previous alliances are somewhat flipped, since Maria T. thought this was the only way the reconquering of Slesia could be achieved.
France became a good friend, a big OFF to Britain and a neutral relationship with Russia.
Frederick 2, the Prussian King smells what's going on and, wohooo (*points to Bush*) attacks Austria in an pre-emptive strike!
Although no1 really defeats the other, Frederick is now seen as the big European hero, the Underdog who successfully managed to defend himself against the superpower of the Hapsburgs
The french by the way, didn't really support Austria when it needed them, nor did the Russians whose new Czar (some chick, karolina or something) had the hots for Frederick (she fancied him)
Anyway, Austria finally accepted the loss of Slesia and tried other tricks, such as negotiating peace between Ottomans and Russians in order to receive Russian gifts to compensate the Polish loss
Later Austria Prussia dn Russia suddenly cooperate for their own egoistic needs...and share Poland. They just take that country and share it among themselves.

and it goes on and on and on..
Donno but I always find such things fascinating as they show us parallel's to today's world, or simply the inherent dirty nature of politics..no matter where

hmm...

so i take this as. over 1000 die, but the Americans are still wrong because they killed hundreds 200 years earlier - in a non world war?

little brother complex?

ok, so i dont want to resort to child like bickering, but at the same time, anyone from nation x has prolly killed someone from nation y. all this taking sides and getting patriotic is good sometimes, but its turing into a friggin kindergarten fight, everywhere - macro and micro.

maybe Bush and Chretin(sp?) should just goto the nap room and pull hair until someone is right...

The occupied french government that attacked the american troops was not the real french government but a german-installed puppet-government. The real french government was at that time located in London, together with the remains of its military forces which remained faithful and intact.
