The rave scene. A culture of its own.
It has become the strongest force in the global dance community.
Injustice has struck.
Everything you will hear or read surrounding the Swirl subject will most probably be couched in a "legal" context. But here is what really went down.
INJUSTICE
Police and the RACJ have decided to stop raves in Montreal and punish music lovers. They want raves to go into illegal venues where the necessary emergency exits and cold running water are not available.
They decided to deny our request for the suspension of the alcohol permits of the Big O, permits absolutely necessary to make sure the party will continue after 3 am. These are the same permits that they have granted us (without a problem may we remind you) for last 6 events we've held at this same venue (Olympic Stadium) and three previous times at the Molson Center. And now, herešs the thing: because authorities have arrested people for drug charges at the latest Black & Blue event and at the Bal en Blanc (which are not even produced by 514), they decided to take it out on us.
NOTE: First of all you have to understand that there's not any more drugs at raves than any other type of music show. You can probably find more at a rock or hip hop show. The only difference is that we like to dance to electronic music.
Donšt get us wrong, we do have the utmost respect for our industry brothers but being accused falsely and taking the blame for drug seizures that can happen just as much at any other type of music show just ainšt fair. The police are complaining that they can't control drugs at raves so they want to shut them down, well the police can't control drugs in prisons either but were not closing them down. The point is that if they're so concerned about drugs in society they should work with the rave community and not against it. Loving music and dancing is not a crime. 514 Productions has always accommodated for rave's steady and healthy growth. For all the best that our Montreal scene has to offer, we brought it to the people, and without any problems or issues.
We had the choice to move the event to a warehouse or a hanger but none of these venues offered a safe environment with satisfactory emergency exits and cold running water that we think is important for the safety of our clientele. We refuse to endanger our scene so we decided to postpone SWIRL. We're announcing all the information about the postponed date at our press conference Thursday May 24th.
READY TO ROLL
Up to the last minute we were ready to put the event on. We filmed our production setup at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday May 19th. We invite you to check out what we had planned for you here:

TAKE ACTION
This is discrimination and matters have been taken to court and we are not done yet. The party will go on and the Montreal rave scene will not be victimized. 514 production extends an invitation to all promoters to join the RAVE ON ! program and support the Montreal electronic music community.
You can join the RAVE ON ! program and contribute your voice to the movement by filling out the petition. The e-mail version of this petition is available here and by filling it out it will be sent out automatically to the Culture Minister Diane Lemieux. Also a postcard petition is available at all ticket outlets and the usual flyer stores. All you have to do is fill in the postcard and mail it... |

NO DRUGS AT RAVES.. Make it illegal to be stoned, drunk or high, and if you are you get sent to jail right away. Because people that do those sorts of things become un productive citizens.. How does that sound?
Got to be a better solution, I think I have it. First of all, drug-prevention-education programs in high-school are goddamn terrible, parents are to blame when their kids start smoking cigarettes, then start smoking pot 4 days/week. (dont deny it, there is something wrong with pot.. read a survey about pot smokers versus non-pot smokers and how they do in shcool etc.. obviously its not to be said that pot-smokers are unsucessfull, they are just less sucessfull). Also, There is not enough research done on speed and E, especially in the area of occasionnal use. If people knew that is was actually harmfull then well, they would stay away from it from the beginning..
On another note, anyone with a brain *will* stay away from PCP or LSD, Crack ,Heroin etc... (although one can say that people would loose their brain from doing other drugs)
Anyways, I sincerly hope a solution is found to a drug problem, beacuse......
I AM ING SICK OF PEOPLE SITTING ON THE DANCEFLOOR, JUST TRIPING OUT. If any of you are guilty of that.. then you.

| Calm down sylphin , if you are a drug lover then that's your problem not ours , don't start blaming the others and don't insult the people triping out ... |

the people on the sitting on the floors tripping out...should be in left there...im getting sick of having to move out of the way at parties to let "stretchers" through. People end up like this because they mix ghb, E, speed, weed and mush together and think they will be ready to run a marathon. I've never seen or heard of someone freaking out on moderate amounts of drugs...
DRUGS ARE NEVER HARMFUL...IN MODERATION!
which means..dont take 4 pills at once or 4 every week.
I am from montreal and i am more pissed than ever. 514 productions puts on the best parties in montreal....hands down! i always read other messages from other small promoters and it makes me wanna yack because those parties are plain BS wih party streamers and hoola hoops handing from the ceiling. the fact that 514 canned its "biggest" rave of the year is frustrating but not surprising. 514 can do whatever they want since the rave scene is bigger than ever and people will go to big parties with big djs regardless of promoters having a bad "rep". I've been to parties in Montreal, toronto, vancouver, LA, SF, Miami, NY, Amsterdam, Madrid and Ibiza..without exageration...MONTREAL ROCKS!! i dont think u can beat this city as far as night life goes. Its rave are awesome and the vibe is just incredible. If you are montreal..reply to this message if u agree with what im saying. go to www.514productions.com to sign the "rave on!" petition....keep montreal alive! |

That is not known, no one really knows that.... which is why the scene is in danger.
If drugs are just as bad for you as beer is, then well, the governments shouldn't have a valid excuse to shut down these parties. (Because like it or not, its not because of a permit that they shut it down)
If one the other hand, they are proved to be harmful (based on occasional use) then people must be informed, for they to make conscious decisions.
Right now nobody really knows, and if they do, well then wouldn't they make it public?..
With the recent annoucement of 514 letting people trade their swirl tickets for the *UBER*commercial Area:One festival (60$.. .. I am NOT going). I'm hoping people wont give up and then start going to 'raves' that last from 9am - 9pm..
