We Are What We Eat

McDonalds, Burger King ,KFC. We know that they make food that is bad for us, but even though every week we hear about new study's telling us what we should and shouldn't eat, we ignore the fact that eating the wrong diet can be a form of suicide!
It is known that that the majority of people in developed countries consume more food than they need, but what is unclear, is who is to blame for this recent change in our eating habits.
America is one of the worst hit by this silent killer, with children between the ages of 5 and 10 most at risk to becoming obese, therefore increasing the chance of developing forms of cancer later in life. This is why US education chiefs are to ban the sale of fizzy drinks as part of a fight against obesity among children. Drinks will be outlawed from cafeterias and vending machines in schools throughout California. The number of American youngsters who are overweight has almost tripled in the past 20 years, studies have shown, and the trend is blamed on junk food and lack of exercise.
The finger of blame is also being pointed at the Americas four biggest fast food corporations: McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and KFC. A New York City lawyer has filed suit against the Big Four, saying their fatty foods are responsible for his client’s obesity and related health problems.
To some people this news may seem to be senseless, but with the accusations that the Big Four were irresponsible and deceptive in the posting of their nutritional information it may come as an eye opener to other 'victims' of this Fast Food conspiracy. One such person is Israel Bradley, 59, who said his ritual of eating a pound of French fries a week gave him high blood pressure, diabetes, made him obese and forces him to walk with a cane. In 1993, he passed out and had to be rushed to the emergency room because of the medical problems caused by his diet.
"I got addicted to it" he said.
On the other hand Walter Olson, a member of the Manhattan Institute specializing in legal-system issues, called the suit a blatant attempt to cash in on the recent publicity over obesity and the tobacco settlements. He also said it disregarded the idea that people are responsible for their own actions.
There is no doubt that obesity is a serious problem, but the only way that we are going to fight it is if we stop pointing the finger of blame at each other. Governments have to tighten measures on Fast food outlets, encouraging healthier meals and forcing them to clearly state the nutritional information and health risks on there products. In my opinion Fast Food should be treated in the same vein as tobacco, after all it is an addictive drug which can lead to serious health problems.

Everything's an addiciton in the USA.

Please, if you're stupid enough to eat that crap day in day out, you deserve what you get. Those fast food joints aren't gonna cough up a cent, why the should they? They offer a product and service, its up to us to take their offer. These fattys are saying 'oh, i can't make decisions on my own, i need money to see the error of my ways'

idiots. yes, obesity is a problem, here in Oz and in other parts of the world, but you don't have to be einstein to work out that french FRIES aren't gonna be a healthy meal. They're fried ffs. America's kneejerk, sue-anything-that-moves mentality just compounds what these obese peoples ideas of themselves. That its not THEIR fault they got this way, its someone else's. BULL.

Ya gotta change a lifestyle to combat serious weight problems, so i agree with the banning of soft drinks etc in schools, bit harsh, but i spose ya gotta start somewhere.

Care to back up that argument at all son?

:D

I remember reading an article in Time magazine that was very similar to this one, basically saying that if the fat people sue McDonalds saying "you made me fat, you said it was good food and I believed you" they have zero chance of getting any money, but if they argue it slightly differently (can't remember how the argument worked), then they would almost definitely succeed.

It's a difficult situation this one, because I'm completely against the whole litigation culture that encourages crap like this (or multi-million $$ compo payouts for idiots that dive into knee-high surf and break their neck on a sandbank), but on the other hand I like to see people stick it to McDonalds whenever possible.

The big M posted a loss last financial quarter, first time in history. And they closed ~500 stores worldwide, first time in history. And Subway now has more outlets in the USA than McDonalds does. Hopefully their time is coming to an end (though I highly doubt it).

Im not sure why this was posted here. A tranceaddict in training, from belfast, posts an article about fast foods and diet in the australian forum. Looks to me like he is fishing for some extreme responses. Or is maybe a born again anti fast fooder.
OLi_A
im totally against fast food and i dont go near maccas and the likes
its a bit low that macdonalds targets children in its ads because to young people, marketing like "get a free toy" for scoffing down a load of is too good to be true for kids. in a way i see that fast foods are addictive cause ive gone through periods where i only ate junk food and you suffer alot when you eat too much of that . i blame laziness and its convenience. a mate of mine had alot of problems cause all he ate was junkfood and he was tryin to be an athlete at the same time, my point being there is no nutritional value in alot of the food out there in the fast food market.
its important to eat healthy BUT you are allowed to have a binge day when you can indulge in some fast food without it affecting you but in the end whats the point of eating something that is of no benefit to you whatsoever, unless your ultimate goal in life is to be obese

Not only did she try and sue them, she won elephant bucks (8 figure sum). The worst part about it was that she was driving while drinking the coffee, tried to turn a corner and spilt the coffee over her legs, which scalded her because it was hot.

That woman is the precise reason that coffee and hot apple pie packaging says "CAUTION: MAY BE HOT"
