Hi,
I've been having probs playing audio (MP3, Wav, Ogg etc) files and video (any type) on my computer.
Lets say I play an MP3 file in Winamp (2.81), and talk on AIM. The computer comes so slow I can bearly move the mouse. When theres an audio file playing and I try typing, nothing will happen for nearly 3 - 4 seconds on the screen. Right clicking the mouse takes sometimes 10 seconds to respond. It never did this a couple months ago, just recently (December or so).
Now, video files. It's about the same prob, but rather then playing smooth (even a 200x200 res vid clip), it will play at about 2 fps, and the sound gets choppy. I have to restart sometimes because it becomes so slow everything crashes.
My current system:
Intel Celeron 800MHz @ 1069MHz
240MB PC-133 SDRAM (though games run smoother with 112MB, rather then 240MB, where Windows runs faster with 240MB, then with 112MB)
40GB HDD
SiS 630E Video
PCChips Motherboard
3Mbit ADSL (using USB modem)
Windows 98SE
DirectX 9
All recent drivers for most hardware
Now, you would think that box would be able to play music and video files no problem, and still be able to use background applications, but recently It has became impossible. It's really starting to p*ss me off, because I cant do much other then type documents. Would anybody know what may be the prob?
I'd be very appreciated. Thanks!
Kris,
EDIT: Btw, I don't think it may be a virus, because I only reinstalled 98SE from XP Corp (ran to slow) two weeks ago. |

| Ok well i was gonna say maybe your registry is clogged. but since you reinstalled that seems silly. Did you do a reformat? or just a refrest of the OS. Anyway on to the second possible cause it could be that when you reinstalled the os your devices didnt configure properly and something may be sharing a IRQ that it shouldnt be and something else may need go to start/programs/accessories/sytem tools/Sytem information and check the Hardware resources/conflicts sharing. Also check to make sure all the cards are seating properly in the motherboard along with cables. If you end up do haveing a conflict disable the device and set it to a different IRQ. |

| Why are u running Win98? It was never intended to utilies the power of your new hardware. U should be using Win2000 or XP. Btw the problem ur decribing sounds like incorrect soundcard driver or program which isnt releasing ram. Are you running anti-virus software? |

did you format after coming back from xp? what are your virtual memory settings? is the drive defragged? they are the first few ideas i can think of, as it was ok now its goten worse. the only thing that did make me wonder was why the games didnt like the extra ram, do you have a mates which uses pc133 ram so you can swap ram sticks? and have you tried running it without the overclock?
theres a few things to thing about, get back to me if no joy!

| too much 0 day I think :p |

Several things I can think of... these are merely assumptions, though:
1) Not enough memory/one of your memory sticks is damaged
2) Spyware
3) Your heavy overclocking makes the PC unstable
4) Win98
5) What's your sound card? Could it be possible it has defective drivers?
6) Have you tried any other music playing software than WinAmp? |

check what programs r running
some may be at a high priority and will suck up most of the system resources
or uve installed one too many dlls and the regisry is cluttered with etc
or u have a hardware conflict, check in the system tab and look under memory |

Ok to answer your questions:
igottaknow:
I'm running Windows 98 because I've tried XP and my computer goes slower then it already is. My hardware is fairly old aswell (plus, intgrated so it's all ghey). I've reinstalled and updated drivers too. If it's a memory problem, I'm doubting that because even when theres no other applications open but Winamp and Windows (all background progs closed) it still does it.
jonsimmonds:
Yeah I did format when I came back from XP. The virtual memory settings are set to be handled by Windows. The drive hasent been defragged in a while, but only because I cant really. Either the computer will crash, or it will have the risk of overheating. As for games, I'm clueless too. You would think with more ram games would run smoother, but I get the complete opposite (btw, the weird ram amounts is because this system motherboard is integrated, so the video (SiS 630E) shares some of the ram as frame buffer (can be set to 2,4,8,16,32,and,64MB) so that takes a dent out of performance. (mine is currently set at 4MB). I don't know anybody who uses the type of ram I do because it's just to old.
jdat:
:P
Mr.Mystery:
More ram = slower performance. Damaged..I don't think so, but who knows. Theres no spyware on this box and I can assure that. I reset the CPU clock speed back to it's original, 800MHz. I can only run Windows98 on this box because any newer uses up a whole wack of my resources, making it slower then it is now. My sound card is integrated onto the motherboard, and, please don't laugh, it's a CMedia Chip (no idea what model because It's nowhere to be found either in software or on the chip), but it does the job. The drivers have been reinstalled and updated, so it may not be that. Windows Media Player, mIRC, Sonique, Music Match Jukebox were others I've tried other than Winamp, and no difference.
KilldaDJ:
When I play audio, the only things running would be Winamp, Explorer (need that), and sometimes mIRC. In Windows 98 I don't think it's possible to set the priority of things, though I could be wrong. The registry should be fine beacuse this OS was only installed two weeks ago, and not much programs have been installed onto the computer.
Eeeee. ;x Btw, I'm gunna try WindowsXP again, and spend the whole day confiuring it, and hopefully it will get better. |

have you tried windows update to get any updates to 98, before you try xp again? and i think the problem with your memory and games suggests to me that the second stick of ram could be faulty, although that shouldnt really affect playing mp3's
[edit] my old p3-450 ran windows xp fine, but i had 512 meg ram, imm wondering if your on board graphics is slowing things down, as if its only using 4meg of memory for video memory it isnt going to be performing that well... |
