is it possible to turn AVI files into MPEG files?

i got this one AVI file movie that i want to change into MPEG file so i'm able to play the vcd on my dvd player that reads mpeg files. well it's on divx and say avi and i want to make it mpeg. is that possible. is there any way i can do it?
just wondering. i always wanted to know if making a file a different type is possible at all. |

what about Quicktime? does that go for that too. basically, i would really love a program that i can make all my quicktime and avi movies into mpeg

| Final Cut Pro, best video editing software for the Mac, allows u to export to dvd, but its expensive. |

| Obviously pro programs like premiere or final cut, but there's lots of free ones too that will let you export your pr0n to vcd ;) :disbelief |

| i think nero has also an option to convert avi to mpeg.. i never used it but a friend of me uses it always.. so i think it works.. :) |
