Just finished listening Paul_Van_Dyk-Live_At_HR-XXL_Clubnight-DAB-03-01-2003. And I have mixed feelings about it. First of all, this set is unlike anything I heard by PvD before. He was all over the board, you could hear Trance, Tech, Prog, Hard House, even BREAKS! Damn, that was definitely not your usual PvD... Critics will say it sucked, because there was no flow... Fans of Prog will say "Whoa, PvD - prog DJ?"... over all I was left thirsty for more and the end of CD1 had me going mad - some serious breakbeat the last 10 minutes or so just FECKING OWNED!!!! :eyespop:
After hearing the best PvD set at Roxy I am wondering is the man finally exploring the new territory and will become like Oakey - "try_to_guess_my_style_today" dj or what?
Check the set at djmixes2k.com and kick your thoughts! :p

Sounds pretty usual PvD to me. Remember, he's an electronic dance music dj, not just trance ;).
Just finished listening to the first part and i guess it's alright but I don't think it's anything out of this world. The set does flow in that PvD flow kind of way, which is not really my style. But hey, whatever rocks your boat. |

Those 2 or 3??? last tracks put a biiiiig smile on my face, I had it blastin' on my stereo and towards the end I was worked up into a frenzy - I can only imagine what someone able can do with that sound. Try this: if you have any "Flying Steps" videos, start it, turn off the volume and turn on PvD setand just watch - AWESOME!!!!!!!
If not, download some ja9war video rips of Flying Steps (breakin it' down, in the arena, etc.) - this stuff rulz... music that makes you wish you could breakdance (or make a silly robot and 'popin' moves) :D LOL... enjoy
EDIT:
Just found Flying Steps video (RA) online... check it Here |

I downloaded all three parts in hope of a new fresh PvD set, I havent
listened to a "new" set from PvD for ages. Not by Tiësto either for
that matter. And I wasn't suprised, PvD just doesnt fit me anymore.
I found myself skipping ahead in all the three parts to find SOMETHING
that I could relate too and find worthy of listening but my ears had
already discussed that with my brain and both had found it impossible.
Glad if you like his sets but for me, he is just another DJ that
I can't stand, I get frustrated listening to his sets, they don't
go anywhere. |

As a DJ playing at a venue, PVD needs to play for the crowd that is there. He plays the music that he feels fits the crowd. Even though he is playing for the masses, as the sets he plays are recorded and circulated around, he is still working the crowd in front of him. For those of you who are major PVD fans, you will know that the Clubnight set in years past has ALWAYS been different. He always mixes different tracks in on this night. Following PVD also means that you are aware of his Fritz radio shows on Wednesdays where he will always experiment with different styles and variations of electronic music.
Why is it necessary to jump all over a set just because it is not driving trance. PVD is not jsut a Trance DJ. He plays a lot of different styles (As you can see). Listening to PVD will give you a different feel each time. He plays in New York differently than in Berlin and the same in other countries. I heard his set in Singapore was moslty hard tracks. Different countries and cultures have diffeent tastes...that is how to measure a good DJ...is he/she playing for themselves or the crowd in front of them. |
