what makes trance trance?

is there a certain guideline that producers follow if they're asked to do a trance remix of a track?
what i'm saying is what defines certain genres, we can all tell apart most songs just by listening to them.
but why is prog trance called that?
is there some set of rules by which we classify a track?

| yeah theres some songs like andain - beautiful things, way out west - mindcircus and sunscreen vs. push - please save me, that they call trance but i think these sound very different then your normal day trance. they should have their own name dont you think? |

| I think people spend too much time examining Trance, House, Techno and the other genres that come from those. A reason why I think Electronica hasnt blown up all around the world like say...Rap and R n B. Its too complicated, or we are making it to complicated for people to say, I KNOW THIS . Take it as this, forgetting about the classifications and what makes the music. To me all this music is about putting your through moods and emotions and making you want to dance. To answer your question. Imo Trance is in its name...makes you feel like your in a trance when you listen to it. A state of losing your mind to the sounds you hear. Postively. What makes Progressive Trance is...Trance that has parts(sounds) that Progress and buildup to climaxes Progressively. Trance moves up and down...Progressive Trance moves forward. Think of Trance as a regular Sine wave...and Progressive as a Sine wave that is stretched out or has low troughs and low peaks. |

Rules? No, of course not. There's no hard set of standards by which something is "trance," "progressive," "techno" or anything else, nor should there be.
Still, one can loosely classify electronic music into different genres. No one will debate the fact that a techno track can be distinguished from trance. There are patterns and trends that can be used to pick out subgenres, but that's a stickier subject.
For example, I claim that Progressive Trance exists (although to less of a degree than it used to), while others deny such a thing. |

Dunno if I'm missing the point of the thread but I wanted to answer the question you originally posed as the title of the thread.
What makes trance trance for me is a pounding kick drum, a wicked bassline and a beautiful melody. If a tune has those 3 things then that's good enough for me!
