So rather then see Viva or UltraSpin this weekend i skipped it for the Lion King the musical. Now this was my first major musical to see in Toronto and WOW what can i say except "Hakuna Matata" because it was wonderful, the translation from movie to musical was amazing, and it was able to bring joy and excitment to all that were there, the songs you know from your childhood so you sung them in your head or as people beside me did sang it out loud. The acting was excellent and is deserving of the claps it got, i will post pictures later. The play ran from 6:30-8:30.

Lets see
DJ (aka conductor) 10/10
Crowd - 9-10 (little baby noises)
Price 8/10 (80 dollars for ticket, 4 dollasr for ice cream and 2 dollars for water)
Pure enjoyment - Priceless :P
For anything else Mastercard :P

Though the crowd would be not a crowd of viva or guv people hehe, but then what can you do, except look at the nice cars.

IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT, SEE IT

yeah mama mia was good. lion king had good costumes and music. however, i'm a big fan of the original animated version, and the acting kinda let me down. the little kid was too annoying for my tastes. :)

Last year, or maybe two years ago I saw both Mamma Mia and the Lion King with my family. Both were pretty damn good shows, seeing musicals really isn't so bad :)

Lion King to close in Toronto at end of September
Dixie Chicks postponing June 12 T.O. stop until Aug. 6 due to SARS

FROM CANADIAN PRESS

In an effort to get people to come to Toronto this summer, theatre impresarios David and Ed Mirvish announced today that their award-winning and long-running production of Disney's The Lion King will close Sept. 28.

"After conducting market research in the United States this past weekend, we have determined that Toronto needs a compelling and urgent reason to motivate visitors to visit our city this summer," the production company said in a statement that really didn't need to mention SARS, the disease that has delivered a body blow to Toronto tourism.

"It's no secret that shows like The Lion King, big musicals, depend on visitors to the city, especially during the peak summer months when Torontonians traditionally leave the city to go to their cottage, or go on holidays," said Mirvish publicist John Karastamatis.

"As we know tourism is way down, so we did focus groups this past weekend with Americans to see how entrenched this idea of Toronto not being a good place to visit this summer is.

"It's pretty entrenched."

Karastamatis said Americans told them they love coming to Toronto. "They think the city is a vibrant, exciting, cosmopolitan destination," he said.

"However, they're not totally comfortable about visiting this summer. Many of them said, (and this is the thing that twigged to us right away) `Yeah, we want to go The Lion King, but it will be there next summer.' "

So closing the popular production, which has brought in more than $160 million for Mirvish alone since it opened 3 1/2 years ago, is an incentive not to wait for some other time.

"If they don't come this summer there won't be another time," he said.

While more than 1,300 performances have been seen by more than 2.3 million people, Mirvish said there are still hundreds of thousands of people in southern Ontario, U.S. border states and the rest of Canada who want to see The Lion King.

Karastamatis said up to 65 per cent of The Lion King's audience in peak summer months has been visitors. During the winter, visitors make up about 25 per cent of audience. He said advance ticket sales to the show have not been magnificent, but many tickets are last-minute sales.

"Someone comes into town, they book a ticket for two nights out," he said. "But we don't want to find ourselves in a situation where those tickets aren't booked if no one is coming to town."

He also said that even if tourism picks up in the city in the next few months, Mirvish is not likely to change the closing date.

"We're very happy with the way The Lion King has taken off in Toronto," he said, adding that the show will have played for 45 months, a respectable run for any musical.

"Everyone is delighted, and they're just sort of thinking, we've done very, very well, here's an opportunity to actually end the show on a high note and end the show with an urgent message that will help the rest of the city as well."

Second City comedy troupe is also trying to help the city, partnering with Ontario Tourism in a Time for a Little More T.O. campaign. Packages at $95 a person include a Second City show, dinner, a Blue Jays game and a hotel room (double occupancy). The campaign runs until July 31. Less helpful to the city was the announcement that the Dixie Chicks are postponing their June 12 Toronto stop until Aug. 6.

"The show is being postponed due to concerns about the risk of to personnel facing quarantine as a result of Toronto's current SARS situation," said a statement from Sony Music Canada.
