The FBI is looking into the forgery of a key piece of evidence linking Iraq to a nuclear weapons program, including the possibility that a foreign government is using a deception campaign to foster support for military action against Iraq.
"It's something we're just beginning to look at," a senior law enforcement official said yesterday. Officials are trying to determine whether the documents were forged to try to influence U.S. policy, or whether they may have been created as part of a disinformation campaign directed by a foreign intelligence service.
"We're looking at it from a preliminary stage as to what it's all about," he said.

Hm, the emphasis is solely on foreign perpetrators. What if it was internal....? But I'm sure no one wants to discuss that! America, land of the free... |

| This is no doubt just a series in the many of Anglo-American follies in the lead up to this (just, I still think) war, but I very much doubt that U.S and British intelligence was cognescent of these issues and that their publication of this without much background work was just poor judgement, not anything more sinister as I'm sure a few of you would believe. |

I just read off of cnn or bbc that it's unlikely that the British, Americans, or Israelis are sources of this forgery. Reason being is that all these countries have extensive intelligence agencies that would unlikely make such simple mistakes in creating forgeries. The reason why it slipped through is that the info was immediately passed onto the UN in good faith a day or two after the British intelligence first received the info. No claim was made by the British or Americans as to its authenticity. It was merely passed on to the UN for the sake of weapons inspections. |

LISTEN TO WHAT I SAID. No claims were made as to the veracity of the the documents when they were presented to the UN. They were handed over to the UN a DAY or two after they were recieved by BRITISH intelligence agencies. What kind of research do you think can be accomplished in 2 days??? It took the UN how long before they discovered that they were forgeries???? |

| -Exactly, and because of things like that the US shoudlnt be in saying EVIDENCE FOR WAR, or attack right away.. see, imagine the U.S. attacks and its on war, and then they find that it was all fake, and thousands of people die, U.S. looses money. Nations cant just go and shove off evidence they receive. And the U.N. clearly said that any evidence that Powell showed (the tapes and pictures) must be thoroughly examined, which NOW I see it as a very good thing to do.. and I think that any evidence that the U.S. proofs to have gotten and show, needs to be examined as well, before going to war, you cant just go to war because some evidence was given jsut a day or two days, and declare war because of it. Here we see that a WAR with Iraq needs more time, and whatever evidence the U.S. needs to show it and prove it, besides of been examined. |
