Sometimes i like also to listen a bit of Rock but it don't give me big emotions like only classical music and trance music can do. IMHO trance music is the tech-evolution of classical music, it can't substitute classical music but in a technology-age can flank it...

what trance really lacks, unlike rock, is live instruments.
you don't know rock if you've never been to a live rock concert and judge only by mp3s (just like you don't know trance if you've neve been to a club and judge by mp3s:D) |

My personal philosophy on the similarities between rock and Trance, and any two kinds of music:
All music is fundamentally the same, although they may sound superficially different. I believe that the emotional levels achieved by Trance music are the highest possible, which makes Trance unique. I personally don't have to be in a "mood" to listen to any kind of music, although I know a lot of people do.
Let me go on with the similarities between rock and trance. They both have similar forms, as many Trance songs have two climaxes and a bridge nowadays, making them Rondo format like rock music. They both follow similar chord progressions, changing at similar moments. Their melody lines (at least for melodic Trance) are similarily repeated. I could even compare the actual buildups, although Trance buildups absolutely kill anything rock can produce :stongue: .
So, Trance rulz because adds a new dimension to sound, as electronically produced sounds can be so greatly manipulated that their maximum effectiveness occurs at all points of a song. Also the effectiveness of layering the sounds, building to a common focal point makes Trance reign supreme.
I agree with a lot of the statements though. Like a DJ preforming live, I agree I have felt no similar rush, and I've played Jazz piano in front of 1000s of people. I also agree that rock is dying, commercialization sux the life out of everything.
Keep the comments coming! This is gold! I'm going to blow my friend away with all these comments, Trance will win in the end! |

It is said no two concerts are ever the same; even if, the environment, the audience and performers are identical. There will always be minor imperfections and variations with each musical performance. Be it the mood of the rocker or the rapport of the orchestra with their conductor, music performed live will always have an amount of unpredictability its audience finds appealing and fresh. It is these variations that give a piece of music it’s soul and because dance music is played from pre-recorded material, I can see how some may say there is no soul.
Your friend’s argument is flawed because he offers examples on two very off-sided things. On one hand he advocates rock but offering examples of live performances of rockers jamming out. On the other, he views dance music as simply stringing pre-recorded tracks together for 3 hours. He forgets a DJ can add variation into a recorded track by using effects, cuts, samples, dynamics and scratches. Even the mixes between tracks offer variation for the listeners. You can give AvB, Oakenfold, Tiesto, and PvD the same records and the resulting set will be entirely different. That’s the soul in dance music.
P.S. Tell your friend, unless they invent a new way for the guitar to sound different, rock will always be limited to the guitar. Whereas dance music is limited only by the speed of technological progression. |

| Man ive gone through this argument so many times its not even funny, although mine is vs rap and other black orientented genres, but nevertheless the same fight. All i hear is "Trance is just some guy at a board pressing buttons, there no emotion in it." I say thas bull. Theres plenty of emotion in it and like u said most of that is aroused in its listeners. I mean the melody that makes you dream i mean i hate saying stuff like this because it sounds a bit gay but its tru. I mean whn you hear that perfect melody tha makes you dream i.e., anything by Riva for me, you in paradise or wherever your "happy place" is thats certainly emotion. Another instance when you hear that bangin beat i.e. Atlanta 020202, i mean it makes me dream im playing to a packed capacity crowd loosing their minds. I mean trance has so much emotion it can make an introverted person like myself totally forget about all the thoughts of shyness in my head. Ill jump around and loose mind in front of people it doesnt matter because theres so much raw emotion coming from the music and im sure the producers feel that same way creating and distributing it to the world, thas just my 50 cents though. Another thing even though there in dance music as well, think of all the crappy people in rock music for the money, all the copy cats, sum 41 = blink 182, i mean they al sing about the same garbage and its kinda sickening sometimes, i mean MTV makes me want to puke. I mean dont get me wrong im not bashing the classics, im not a rock fan but even i have respect for the old stuff, the emotion they put in it and the way they played for the music, and didnt cater to television and popularity. I mean both have emotion and another theing i hear a lot is, just because the majority of trance has no vocals people say it lacks skill and emtiion and i think we all know thas bull like i said so im not even goin to get into that, bottom line i have respect for classic rock but that dosnt mean trance should be taken lightly because someone singing loudly in every track either. |

| I think rock and hip-hop and trance are all one in the same. And I'm not talking about the commercial stuff. By just simply saying "rock is " and not giving any examples, you're doing the same thing as those ignorant peopel who say "trance is " and give no reasons. Rock, trance, and hip-hop all have pure raw emotion and passion in them. Listen to "Don't Ever ing Question That" by Atmosphere (hip-hop) or some Rage Against the Machine, and try to tell me that those have no emotion. When a guitar player sits down to write a song, he doesn't just write down some stupid crap. He sits and writes his emotions and feelings/thoughts through his guitar. The same way a hip-hop producer makes beats, the same way a trance producer will make a tune and the synths will either be uplifting, sad, or whatever. This is because everything down to the bass line is reflective of the emotion that the person was feeling while writing the song. When a DJ is spinning, the tunes he plays are reflective of what he is feeling. No one is going to spin happy music or play happy music if they aren't happy. If I'm depressed, I want to listen to music reflecting what I'm feeling at that time. I dunno, I think hip-hop, rock, electronica, punk, whatever, all REAL music, meaning music not made for record sales, are all related in that they reflect pure emotion. Music is a universal language that is used for emotion. |

First of all trance doesnt give off any more emotion than any other genre. A proper rock song can give off just as much emotion, so can some good hip-hop or jazz.
I don't think that trance has any advantage because of new technologys, and I dont think rock has any advantages because the song live is never the same.
I do think that as long as the artist has talent and puts his emotions into his work, s/he can create something special. With a synth or a guitar, or anything else for that matter. |
