| its a nice mix! its very smooth! do u use turntable or a cdplayer! it seems like you did it in a cd player! But anyways! it was a very nice mix! i enjoyed listening to it! Keep up the work! |

| Thanks, amit! I did use two turntables and my PC as a third "turntable". Why does it sound like a CD player Mix to you? |

Well, I don't really want to dissect the mix in detail 'coz I'd really look anal again (right Grimm ... hehe).
The track selection isn't really my taste but it features a fairly nice cross-section of your standard trancey tunes ... a lot of people would like the tracks.
Mixing is fairly clean but some mixes seem a little rushed. You would bring in the new track fine but then it seems like you would run out of patience (or time) and just cut out the outgoing track. Try working on that and your mixing will sound even smoother. Otherwise I'm impressed with the precision of the mixes.
Overall it is a quite tight mix that could rock a few club dancefloors.
to amit: how can you tell a difference between a CD mix and a turntable mix ? |

skywarp: it's nice to see that someone knows what he's talking about. I know what you mean with the "rushed" transitions. There are 2 or three in this mix where the trax are just together for 16 or 32 beats until I cut out the old one. But this is mainly to avoid the "battle of the killer melodies" as I call it. As you probably saw I don't always start the tunes in the beginning where they have only beats. I like it when one melody is just over and the new one starts, like the transition from The Light to Dance No More or Exit Aspiral to Plasma Scope. But when I do this kind of mixing and let the old track in for longer I'll have this trainwreck kind of melody-battle which makes me puke when DJs do it. ;)
But thanks for your comments. I think the Best Of 2000 Mix that I'll put up will not suit you, because it is so packed with tracks I just had to "rush" at times... |

"Battle of the Killer Melodies" ... LOL ...
Yeah i know what you're talking about. And I really like that you're not mixing the intro-outro "kickdrum-only" parts of the tracks (one of the first thing I look for in a mix). That technique tends to sap the energy out of a mix REAL fast.
A way to make the melody mixing work for you is to try and match the keys of your tracks. This requires a good ear, some formal musical education and a keyboard. A good intro to harmonic mixing is on www.djprince.net . Once you learn that technique you will be able to mix and layer melodies without having the melodic trainwreck. Mind you, this is a very advanced technique and I heard it done properly maybe two or three times ... it is still WAY beyond of my skill level but hey - it's something to strive for, right ?
Again, the "rushed" transitions aren't bad in any way and I'm sure that only a trained ear would be able to pick them out when listening carefully. On a club system such minor imperfections would be absolutely inaudible.
Another thing I forgot to mention, it is good to see that at least some DJs take the time to properly record and master their mixes. This is one of the better sounding recordings I've heard - without any significant clipping while still having your levels loud enough. |

skywarp: "try and match the keys of your tracks. This requires a good ear, some formal musical education and a keyboard"
Well I only have the good ear:). I heard about harmonic mixing but I'm not at all familiar with keys, notes and all that stuff :(
Thanks for the link, I will check that out when I have some time. Is there a way to get a listen to your work? It sounds like you mix, too.
Thanks for the comment on precision and recording, they are both important to me. But I'm still having trouble with my harddrive (there is a thread in the chill-out room or DJ room about this).
OK, now here is the next mix. It's not new, but new to the TAs.
It's a pretty crazy mix I make at the end of each year with my favorites in it. Takes a lot of planning...and fast mixing.
Get it here:

I put a cue file up as well, but it's the first time so I don't know of it works. Think you'll have to decode the mp3 and rename it to bestof.wav
Comments and tips for future mixes are always welcome. I hope you enjoy it :D

hey dawn, listened to the best of 2000 mix and its awesome!!!
powerful, fast, and the first thing i thought of when i listened to the first threee minutes was driving with this mix in my player through the city, speeding throu small street and so on!!!!:D:D:D
speedy gonzales, hepa hepa hepa.... voigas!!!!
being honest i dont know very much bout DJing but i´d apreciate having every song bit longer into the mix like 30 sec per song.
This would keep up the fast style but give u more feelings of every single song!!
btw u could be very nice and send it to me per icq over night:D:D:D
Übrigens: Grüße aus Wien;) |

Well, I tried to explain that this is not my normal way of mixing. It's supposed to present my faves in a "megamix" fashion. These are all tracks that were on my previous mixes from 2000, so the people that know me and listen to all my mixes know all the songs. It's just my way of letting the last year pass before my eyes in 75 minutes :D
Thanks for your comments :)
gruss aus hamburg nach wien!
Why do you want me to send the mix when you already have it?
Weren't you able to save the mix to your disc? |

Wow, great mix! Even better than the previous one.
Just one question... DJ Valium - Go Right For... Are you sure that one was from 2000? It sounds like a song from the 80's, haha :) ;)
Same 80's EuroDance feel. As a matter of fact I quite like it.
Signum - Coming on Strong: Which remix did you choose? I have a remix with much better reverberating synths, the one you chose I think sounds a bit flat.
This mix is great for the dancefloor! Fast and "crazy", like you say! |

djdawn, also another question: What mix of "DJ Valium - Go Right For" is this?
I have an MP3 that's probably the original mix, but it doesn't sound like yours.
It has ridiculous amateurish vocals "Go right right for" in the "disco" section where the melody changes very fast. These thin vocals ruin the whole song!!
Which remix did you use, and which is best? Thanks. |
