I totally agree. I think that movie is a perfect example for this thread as well. Vangelis did an amazing job with that soundtrack, allowing some of the movies moments to transcend. Good examples are when Harrison Ford is having a dream about a Unicorn running through the woods, and once the mythical creature comes into view, the music becomes absolutely Euphoric.
The other scene that really stuck out in my mind was when the final android dies. He goes on to talk about all the amazing things he had seen in his short life, and then went on to say "All these moments lost, like tears in rain." I don't know why but the music at that scene was just absolutely perfect as well.
Anyone who has never seen that movie definitely should. After watching it, I was inspired to get the soundtrack as well! |
My favorite is the opening shot with the panaramic view of the futuristic city. |

| For me it has be to at the end of Heat when Pacino shoots De Niro and they hold hands until De Niro dies. Very powerful stuff. De Niro and Pacino's charcters are cop/criminal enemies but have mutual respect for each others skills. Moby - 'God moving over the face of the water' is the background music, it really works. If you havent seen it, check it out. You will appreciate it. |

| The "NEVER ENDING STORY" I like how the music gave it a feeling, at least when I was *small* and watch it, I liked it.. music fits. |

The orchestral piece at the end of Requiem for a Dream was amazing--since then it has also been used in a bunch of movies, including Lord of the Rings. The frenetic electronica (Brainbug, etc.) of Darren Aronofosky's excellent first movie, Pi, also complemented the action well.
Giorgio Moroder's incredible synth productions for Midnight Express are also among my all time faves (of all people, TA's should be able to appreciate the beauty of Moroder's "The Chase" and "Midnight Express").
Ennio Morriccone's spaghetti western instrumentals ("The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" will always be class.
Mike Oldenfield's "Tubular Bells," Carl Orff's "Oh Fortuna! (from the opera Carmina Burana), and Harold Faltermeyer's "Axel F" are also up there.
We could also get into a discussion about the best soundtracks of all time, but we'll save that for a different thread... |

you mentioned the lotr and the music leading up to gandalf letting go of the walkway etc...
but i absolutely loved the music at the beginning of the TWO TOWERS, where it has gandalf falling, but mid-air fighting the balrog or whatever :p very powerful, gave me goosebumps. |

| Requiem for a Dream, definitely. The soundtrack made the movie into an artform. |
