hacker ethics

what is everyone's ideas of hackers?

Its only until recently that my curiousity has been getting the best of me to try out some tricks from the dark side of 1s and 0s. As things are going on, i've realized hacking also extends out of the box into what 2600 calls The Freedom of Information.
(2600 is a hacker magazine)

Computer wise, i've been poking around in other boxes without damaging anything. in fact, i'll just leave a little text saying they are unprotected. Most recently i've been analyzing the process of security at some sites just to see if i can gain administrative rights.
While it is fun, there is always the need to fill my curiousity. what happens if i delete this. what happens if i lock that.
OR
email the owner of that network and describe the hole i've found and how to patch it.

as i said, the hacker mentality can also leave your box.

studying the timeclock at work, seeing how to gain employer access and program a 10 minute block of overtime to every day i clock in.
scanning cell phone transmissions while i'm working.
doing "something" to someone who filed a compleint against you.

is there right and wrong in the hacker world?
or is it that anyone who doesn't protect themselves gains no sympathy when someone uses his head to override your power?

it's like this. Hack those that try to you..i.e the government, the cia, fbi, schools etc.. Dont hack ordinary people i.e the regular windows user.
Dmatrox
the boundary of right and wrong is up to you. even if you are just breaking in and not damaging anything, people dont like others, especially those without permission poking around in their systems. even if no damaged is caused, someone might complain to the feds. eventually if do make it the fed radar just be careful that you arent to full of yourself - big egoed, and dont post or irc any of your activities.

by all means go explore, but remember some sysadmins are sensitive about the info they are *supposed* to protect. its like breaking into someones house and writing a note, "hi i was here" on a piece of paper and leaving. people wouldnt like that.

if you get good enough, you should contact sysadmins who are security freaks and challenge them that you can find a hole and gain access and you might be able to get known and eventually get paid for security consulting ;)

i repeat, dont talk about your specific ventures on the internet :) I guess you knew that, but just to emphasize. :D

Here's a dumbed-down version...

Have you ever built a Lego set, a toy train, or something that comes with pieces to put together? Okay, well did you use instructions? If not, then you're a hacker; you figured out how something works and how to manipulate it all on your own, and you made it work for you.

Have you ever gained illegal access to a computer system? If yes, you're a cracker, not a hacker.

If you want to go by the true definition of 'hacker' when asking what the rights-and-wrongs would be, then I would say that there is basically nothing wrong. Hacking is just fooling around, learning how stuff works and getting it to do what you want it to and/or what it's not originally intended to do. Okay, so perhaps some of this stuff could be illegal.

Oh, and +1 on the 2600 reference

i just got done watching the movie Se7en with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt. i wonder if a hacker has ever tried using his skills to send a message to society.

Personally the FED's dont care about hackers , there more interested in the Major High Tech Security Hacks and Vuneralbilites not some cleaver unix guru in his bedroom just got root to a uber box.

The CCIPS (Computer Crime Information Protection Services) < "I think thats right, are a sub division on the FBI/CIA offices, who will probabily take interest but seriously the numbers are growing and i imagine as technology is growing very very fast, these Anti Net Police or whoever have a lot of work to much to even look into or care about as security agents dont come cheap.

Networks and Normal Ppl have they own responsibility in protecting there own systems, every company must invest in securing its systems, most wi fi networks are un secure and any Windows is not 100% secure and i imagine most companies are using windoze which is lame.

Back to your 'Ethics opinion' It sounds like you have an interest and a skill in Unix security which is a great skill to learn and have. I imagine your a 'Grey Hat' Hax0r And i have nothing wrong with that. The people who should burn are Windoze Worm makers , RIAA for sueing innocent people who wish to share some music ffs, also copanies like Microsoft charging £150 for a crap OS System.

Overall all i have to say is " Hack the Planet " lol /

its not limited to computers. search around, the actual definition of hacking is a lot different than I see a few people here using it. the thread starter should do some research on that first.

then if you really find a lot of loop holes in systems start a freaki company. Security is a hugely profitable venture. and since you are already doing it, you might actually like doing it for a living or a side project hobby.

just don't be like that one kid who would get into a system, then email the company, tell them he got in, and that if they want to stop such attacks they need to pay him money to fix it. Thats illegal.

Free Kevin.....wait, ima few years late. crap.
