Mike Awesome wasn't a very well known wrestler in some circles, but in ECW he was a dominating force. I watched him during ECW's last 2 years and he was an incredible high-flyer for a man 6'5", 290 pounds.

Dave Meltzer is reporting that former ECW World Champion Mike Awesome (real name Michael Alfonso) has passed away. He was found dead on Saturday evening in the Tampa area according to those close to the family. He was only 42 years old.

At about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night, friends were going to his home in Tampa, Florida to pick him up and go out. He never answered the door and they found him hanging in the home. The death is believed to be due to suicide pending results of the autopsy.

His matches with FMW superstar Masato Tanaka (and one of MY personal fav. wrestlers) were exciting, fast paced and memorable. Here's one in the video below.

When he went to WCW, he wasn't as aggresive or as "Awesome" as he was in ECW.

R.I.P. Mike Awesome, aka Michael Alfonso. :(

I'm shocked, he was older than I thought for one, but he was very good at stuff like in the match there, stiff matches, some athleticism & he worked well with tanaka. R.I.P.

juice does that to ya.

I'm actually really suprised that more of the ECW lot hasn't passed on yet.

Specifically the Sandman - but in general, the guys from ECW proper (none of this current WWECW nonsense) showed some pretty serious disregard for their own wellbeing... :(

I still have a VHS of Sabu/Abdullah the Butcher matches from both Japan and the States (in the days of "ECW Arena") that have me convinced that Sabu is invincible.

Same for Terry Bradshaw. :nervous:

this is a sad day indeed, yet i am not surprised he passed away. i wouldn't be shocked if we see more of our favorite wrestlers from the 90s, especially the late 90s, pass. professional wrestling is a very demanding occupation.

While he's still on tv, sandman can pretty much drink some beers, smash a stick over people & pose for the crowd, he can't take many bumps these days, and is protected since he's a "name" ecw people can relate to.

RVD will be fine cos he's a natural gymnast, he's able to do the great things with his body from years of training and hasn't juiced up.

People, who imo are in danger of an early death from the current lot are

HHH
Big Show (he's already taken time off now because he can barely move & is afraid he'll end up like andre the giant)
Giant Gonzalez (remember this 7ft guy? in his late 30s/40s he's now confined to a wheelchair in argentina)
Sabu - simply for the things he's done to his body
Batista - Big Dave is already 40 & I dunno, i get a bad vibe about his health
Kurt Angle - this guy is in huge danger. He's been taking upto 70 painkillers a day to move sometimes & wwe let him go to get well, tna signed him but his general health is worrying.
Mark Henry - there's a reason this dude is always injured, and it ends in 'roid

Many have tried to look after themselves, such as undertaker & stone cold by limiting what they do etc.

All this wrestling talk should go in the "What kind of porn do you like" thread.

suicide...wow
Vlad
Im surprised Terry Funk and Mick Foley arent in a wheelchair.

Sabu: I dont know what it will take to kill this guy, but it will be alot, cause Ive seen this guy take punishment beyond what any person should be able to handle.
RVD: Gymnast or not, the guy has had hellish matches... not as suicidal as Sabu, but there isnt a high flying move he wont do.

All I know is that all of these guys will not making it to their 50's standing up.
