Do any of you invest?

If you do, what do you own? Stocks? Real estate? Private equity? Commodities? Does anyone trade options and/or futures contracts?

I've made 4 investments so far. I bought Green Plains Energy (GPRE) stock at $20.60 and promptly sold at $26.41 a week a later. Then I bought TransGlobe Energy (TGA) at $3.96 and sold at $5.09. At the same time I bought Vaalco Energy at $4.76 and sold at $8.54. I bought Diana Shipping (DSX) at $30.05 and sold at a loss at $26.54. All in all, I'v turned about $800 of capital into $1100-1200. Currently, I am completely out of the market. I'm building up my capital reserves and am stealthily biding my time, hunting for once-in-a-lifetime bargains. I already have several candidates for future investments. Mostly in the dry bulk shipping industry. Names like Navios (NM), Excel Maritime (EXM), Euroseas (ESEA), and Diana Shipping (DSX).

best of luck but that's too little money to bother with the stock exchange imo.

You got to start somewhere. It's best to get familiar with a little money than risk a lot of money and not know what the hell you're doing. I'm looking for capital appreciation which requires higher returns which only stocks can provide. Leaving $1000 in a 1% savings account means I lose value to inflation. I don't feel comfortable with my money just sitting around doing nothing.

You could have made millions a week or so ago, at the office we thought that our software was malfunctioning when we saw FNM up about 3500%, it turns out some bank (i think) wanted to buy a substantial amount of FNM at market price and somebody else was nice enough to set the price for his batch pf stock at about 22.50$ per share :haha:

Yeah I was getting into it before the crisis, I had shares in AMD JKA+ and ENT.

just like you i was trading about grand, made like 90 bucks, but got so frustrated and quit cause it will take forever with compound interest to start making some real loot.

Ill wait till I have atleast 10 gs from outside the stock market to start up again. until then ill keep montoring peoples ideas and moves on investopedia, i wish i could organize data as well as your spreadsheat though..

Once in a life time bargains happen every week. But it can take our entire life to find them.

Edit. Krypton I thought you were already investing, or were you just building up a lot of research?

Stocks are a risk if you go into it big time, but sure everythings a risk nowdays :) a gamble, fun aswell though.

Best thing I ever done was throw a few K into premium bonds, not sure if such a thing exsists there. There is a prize draw every month, I have won a few hundred quid. My 2 year old has around a £1,000 in bonds and she has won a few hundred also :)

But best of luck to you for trying, you have to start somewhere, but just watch out. A friend of my dads told him to invest in stocks in a company (His friend owned) he put about 40k into it and the company went wallop shortly after.

with stocks its alot simpler because you are buying a share at a cheap price and then selling it when it gains more value. then.

like i would invest in an ira while your young. if you wait too long and you have the economy change like it has in the last ten years then you might not have time to recoop your losses and might have less than you put in. it all sounds like a load of horse .
