Tried google but it's a hard topic to find.

When I grow up, I want to own an F1 team.

Is it correct to use 'an' or 'a' in this sentence? It's tricky, because you should use 'a' prior to a word beginning with a consonant, but 'an' for words beginning with a vowel. In this case, it's a vowel - 'e' - so my instinct is always to use 'an'. Nonetheless, some would argue I'm wrong because F1 is an abbreviation of 'Formula One'.

an. that F1 is short for something isn't relevant.

I think it's "a" even though it sounds wrong.

Based simply on the fact if you expand F1 to formula 1 team you would use "a".

This is why English is retarded.

I would write "an", though I would use "a" if I actually said "Formula One".

It's specifically for a vowel sound, which F1 does indeed begin with. It doesn't matter what it's short for.

I think it sounds wrong because you pronounce the F as if it starts with an E "Eff" therefore you feel that you need to precede the "Eff" with an an. If that makes sense?

it does start with an Eff sound. that's how you pronounce F1. if you mean formula 1, then you you say formula 1.
Fledz
Yea that makes sense to me.

Ya I know, I was stating the obvious but trying to explain my reasoning. My grasp of English is fairly strong, but clearly in this case I was shafted.
