9/11 - 2006 Memorial Thread

On September 11, 2001, four U.S. planes hijacked by terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania killing nearly 3,000 people in a matter of hours.
Today, 5 years later, we pay tribute to those who lost their lives.
Out of respect for those who died - please keep this thread free of partisan political commentary, anti-American sentiment, conspiracy theories, etc.

...justice will be served someday.
Yes, Thank you for making this thread RJ.
It's a tough day in my house when September llth comes around. I lost my Uncle in one building, and his wife to be in the second tower. And my bestfriend lost her dad.
IT's truly a day to think about and remember the people and what happened. It may have taken family and friends away, but it bonded people as well in the process. I remember being in History class when I heard about this.
Does everyone still remember where they were when they heard about this?

...had just landed at heathrow coming back from ibiza and the airport was just being locked down. (i was supposed to have been working in Durban/ S-Africa at the UN World Conference Against Racism - which the US ironically boycotted!!; the conference ended 2 days early b/c of this). came home and turned on the tv thinking it was a joke or another version of die hard II. nonetheless, needless to say, - to this day - it is shocking & unbelievable. i will refrain from any other comments ... just makes me so mad & sad.
R.I.P. to those who lost their lives & bless those who have lost their loved ones.
It was a devistating event and may all those who parrished rest in peace. I feel for all those affected by this tragedy.
I'll never forget that morning. It seems all of Bay St. stood still, stock brokers, bankers, lawyers, retail sales people, janitors, fast food cooks... anybody you could imagine, jammed into the little coffee shop in the basement of 105 Adelaide (where I worked at the time) sitting in stunned silence watching the events unfold on CNN. Without question it was the single most profound experience I can recall having with a group of strangers. It wasn't just the horror of seeing all those people jumping from the buildings, imagining the suffering of those trapped inside, or even knowing the tragically sensless loss of lives we all witnessed as the towers fell.... it was all those things but in addition a realization that we had just witnessed an event that would change the world forever, the knowledge that we would never again feel truely secure.

I got my ass to class that morning for an 9:30 class. I lived in rez so pretty much crawled out of bed and zombied it over to the other building. The prof announced the news to us. I didn't understand what he was saying really because he knew nothing about it. Just about some problems with planes and New York. I then was glued to the TV after that. My roomates and I were all freaking out. Man, the whole university gathered around any possible TVs brodcasting the news.
RIP to all those that lost their lives trying to save others. That was most tragic.
On Oprah right now, they had the Airline worker who checked the terrorist before thier flight. It was interesting to hear hos story, a different point of view.

I woke up in the morning and was having breakfast when I turned on the TV and saw what I thought was just going to be a small fire - it was right after the first plane had hit. When I saw the replay I kinda pondered wtf was going on and went to work... on the way there while listening to Howard Stern the 2nd plane crashed...that was a bit surreal.
I remember the day like it was yesterday.
I was working at Nortel in the call centre when it happened.
I remember one of the guys beside me, Jason, told me and I couldn't believe what I was hearing when he told me.
There was about 80 call centre agents and we all ran to the closest conference room where the tvs where and turned on the news; they just hit it about 10min ago.
What I saw and how I felt will hopefully never be repeated.
Oh God, what will be next?? Should we go home??
The feeling is one of hopelessness and deep uncertainty.
The tension was thick and I slump back at my desk.
My wife called, she's coming over from her work; she's scared.
She arrives in the car about 1/2 hr later and we hold each other in the parking lot for seemed like eternity.
I didn't know what to say? What do you say?
I know I'm supposed to give some words of encouragement but I'm lost for words.
I just look at her reassuringly that if this is it, then I wouldn't want to be anywhere else in the world right at that moment and nothing else matters.
That night when we went home to our apartment in Etobicoke, where we lived on the 25th floor overlooking in the airport direction, the deafening silence of an eerily quiet sky.
May we never have to go through that again and R.I.P. to those that perished.
It was lunchtime at home and we got a call from my colleague's boyfriend, we put CNN on on the computer in time to watch the second plane hit.
It was tragic, very surreal and, quite honestly, scary to be in England - 'experts' said we were next and they thought it was going to be soon after. It wasn't, the bombs didn't happen for another 2 years, but still.
My parents were away on vacation and one of the guys in their hotel was secret service, he got picked up... My other colleague ended up spending the first 28 hours of his honeymoon on the plane in a Canadian airbase.
I visited Ground Zero 2 summers ago. Haunting.
Frenchie, my thoughts are with you and everyone who lost a loved one on this anniversary.
i was home sick that day and for some reason i woke up early and turned on the tv while my mom was making me breakfast. At about 8:40am all the channels switched to breaking news from NY. 15-20min later another plane hit the tower and hoesntly i was horrified, I didnt know what to think, it looked like an explosion and then they mention how another plane fell on pentagon and the n one more plane somehwere in the field. I thought for a second that its not going to end there and another plane will hit cn tower or someshit.
I was inside WTC in 2000 summer time. My whole family went to NY for a few weeks, our friends took us there to show the city. I dont really rememeber but i think we changed about 3 elevators to get up on the top floor..When i thought about all those people that were inside i remember seeing i was in complete shock, when both towers fell i began to cry, it was unbelievable. So many people there inside and outside the building right in the heart of downtown NY, i knew it was a disaster. To this day i still can't believe that both of those buildings are gone..
I didn't know about this until around 1 in the afternoon when a prof for a Peace and Conflict course I was taking mentioned it.
My first thought was someone is going to get really hurt over this. (Meaning ppl responsible)
As I turn on the radio and reports came out of Kabul of Triple As being fired (anti aircraft weapons), I'm thinking, here we go again.
I didn't think this event would have such profound impact on my life, but it did. The cascade of world events triggered another cascade of events that effected our daily lives... I wonder how long will this go on?
I don't think I can ever forget 9/11 and all those ppl who died. It just makes my blood boil whenever innocents perish for stupidest of reasons.
For the better or the worse, Canada is in this too, along with US. We don't give up finding those responsible for these kinds of atrocities.
We need a better president to get the job done and properly.

9/11 what it means to me
Five years ago to this day
Many Heroes unexpectedly parted their ways.
Through the rumble, terror and destruction
Where there were once were twin towers
Now we will forever lay flowers.
We were all witnesses to the terror in the air that day.
This is written in remembrance for all those we lost,
Its now a place where some still hold their fingers crossed.
Wishing they could have found there loved ones,
Around the world today we will hear the silence of guns.
We shall all hold our head down in peace,
There was stillness in those moments that will last forever.
Today, all day, everyday we will remember the thousands that were lost,
Here, there and over seas still fighting for freedom
Is continuing world peace just some thing just for imagination?
Keep your fingers crossed that the moment isnt lost.

i'll be shocked if this is adhered too ..
John Stewart's first broadcast on The Daily Show after 9/11 as he reacts to the tragedy, 5 years ago.
I promise, it's not political, just a talk from the heart from a funny man.
I respect him so much for having the courage to go on air after this.
I was just there this weekend. Pic to follow.
edit: Here is a pic I took from the Staten Island Ferry. I took the free ferry ride so I can get a better pic of the Statue of Liberty, and to take a picture if the 'blue ghosts' of the towers, emitted by bright beams of light where they used to stand.

great pic AJ!
of all the design concepts they proposed to build what was in place of the WTC, not one really had me sold. If anything, i thought they should rebuild both towers in their identical form. the fact that both towers would once again stand is probably the greatest statement they could make to those who brought it down.
