Actually, this question did have merit at one time, but not any longer. The very first generation of mixers were really nothing other than crossfaders. The djs didn't use headphones and you couldn't control the volumes or change the pitch. Of course, this was back in the 1950s or so, when the very first djs were coming about. A good book to read if you want to know more about the history of djing is: Last Night a DJ Saved My Life; The History of the Disc Jockey, by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton.
