Good old Novation bassstation and all it's siblings.
Roland MC202

Roland Juno 60 - a lot of the best bassline ever came outta this baby.

Why exclude FMs tho??
I had a Yamaha TX81z and it was a bass monster

Im only excluding FM because I have a tx81Z on the way

I also heard there is not much difference between the Bassstation hardware and VST, anyone know any more on this?

Thanks to everyone else for the suggestions.. might look at the SH101 and Juno 60 as mentioned..

But if anyone else has any ideas.. for thumping bass.. let me know

Notice that a lot of these are rolands...
-SH101
-mc202 (basically an Sh 101 with a few differences and the worst sequencer in the world- EVER)
-Juno 106
-Juno 60
-Juno 6
You can get some good bass out of the alpha juno 1/2- but not as fat as the 106/60. Still affordable and great.
-tb 303 or any one of its clones (basstation would be a good choice- as is a freebass for simplicity)
-Korg mono/poly- rare but very fat. 4 oscillator synth- very pricey and very rare and very very good.

Bear in mind that all of the above (except for the 106 and alpha 1/2) dont have midi and are triggered with cv/gate connections- meaning you will have to buy a midi-->cv convertor (get one from kenton) if you want to trigger it from a sequencer.

Any yamaha FM rack or synth will give you some great bass with careful programming- but thats the thing, programming FM from the synth/rack itself is a bitch- best to get an editor. Dx100/21/27/7 etc..
The TX is a great choice- nicely done.

-The yamaha CS series is very good too (not the cs1x/2x/6x series- i mean the original analogue ones). Not as immediate as the others, but can be made to shake the room. Hard to find and expensive.

Another option not many people pick up on is the casio CZ series synths.
Even the baby CZ101 is not a great deal of money, but can create some positively evil bass. ditto for the CZ1000, 3000, 5000 and CZ1. Surprisingly affordable-and also a great deal easier to program than the DX series.

For the ultimate bass machine- get yourself a moog taurus. You play it with your FEET

Its just a shame that you can now buy a box with all of these sounds preset on it- takes away any programming that you used to have to do, which in turn teaches you about the sound and what it actually is. Flicking to a preset, and turning down the LPF cutoff, is slightly different to actully creating and fine tuning the sound from scratch.

Get yourself an sh 101 or a juno 106 (two of my favourite machines ever) and have fun tweaking!
