The dollar amount is based on the exclusiveness of the sneaker. The pigeons for example are part of a world wide "pack" of sneakers representing certain sneaker cities. Tokyo, London, Paris, New York amongst the few who were identified by STPL Designs as a prominent sneaker community.
Pigeons actually caused quite the ruckus here in NYC. The line for this sneaker had gone on for about 3 days worth of camping out infront of the store. Shortly after the sneakers had released, as people were leaving with theirs only to be mugged, stabbed, and even shot for these sneakers. The incident was reported in the news here in NYC.
This is great news to hear FCLA has opened, (as FCNY-FlightClub New York can also be viewed online @ www.vintagekicks.com) as LA has one huge sneaker community.
I for one am a huge sneaker collector so I understand what the fuss is about, but before you start throwing out random insults about pricing, just think what collectors pay for a MJ Rookie Card, or Barry's homerun ball that broke the records, or any collectible memorabelia for that matter. Sneakers are just the same, just that the collaboration with various designers and the amount of sneakers made during that collaboration is what is most sought after.
