Atrocities of more than 2998 deaths

well, this is my first time in this forum. i'll just tread water for a while to get used to the debate styles and rules.

have there been attacks on countries/people where the death toll was higher than 2998, which i was told is the total count of the 9/11 tragedy, in the past 50 years? By attacks, i guess a better word would be Pre-Emptive attacks, or the related.

but....would u consider the bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima as attacks? or were they a justifyable retalliation?

What do you mean by attacks? Do you mean one isolated incident or in the broader perspective? If you mean the latter than I would say Rwanda had something over a million people killed over the course of 1 or 2 years.

And for your second question:

I guess it depends who you ask. I would consider them counterattacks and you'll have to decide for yourself whether or not they were justifyable. They certainly did a lot to end WWII, so some may say the prevented more deaths than they caused.

welcome aboard, there's always room for more, although lately it usually takes me like half a day reading everything just to catch up on the debate. i really like how there's plenty of varying view points on the left center right spectrum

Ahh yes, I almost forgot this one . And now you see why I despise the UN? On the one hand criticism is placed on the US for acting alone on issues such as Iraq, yet the UN is oblivious to far worse humanitarian crises such as this? Can you not see a pattern emerging of UN ineptitutde that has led many americans to doubt its abilities? It failed in Serbia, it failed in Somalia, it failed in Rwanda, the Congo, and whatever else we missed through the past several decades ... and we are to place trust in its ability to manage world crises??? I acknowledge the US's mistakes in dealing with world problems. However the worst mistake one could ever possibly make is to place your trust in an international body such as the UN in taking care of teh world's problems. It is by far, the greatest waste in hope of the past half a century.
