When you get stuck..........

What do you do? If your working on a track, remix etc and get stuck on one part do you move on to another part of the track and come back to it later? Keep at it until you get there or just start a new track all together or do you have another approach?

Its all about your personal workflow. Sometimes when I get stuck I just go do something else for a little while, come back and try again later. There are some days that it "just ain't happening" so I don't try to force it. It's way too easy to screw up your track if you are stuck and revert to just "messing around".

although this is not always 100% true, most of the time it's exactly what happens

Sometimes if I'm really lucky I can merge two songs together, that sometimes creates really good things, otherwise I leave it alone for a day or so and do something else, like in a different genre or on a different instrument, or even something completely non musical!
Just try and get away, then come back and think about where you want the track to go...

Thanks for your posts guys. Well just so you know Im stuck on a remix and been trying to get a part done fo days now, I usually just move on to another part when this happens but didnt this time. Ive changed a few things as a result, good and bad. I'm gonna move onto another remix for a few days hopefully that will help.

Its fustrating as I usually get this problem with original material, I started the remix well, flowing good, as I already have the melodies from the original I thought it would be slightly easier. A break will hopefully give some inspiration.

when i get stuck i usually go lie down on my bed and cry and feel depressed.

then i get high and i feel like god and i make some trippy shit that only makes sense while under the influence of THC.

as i begin to sober up i realize that everything i do is a futile attempt at trying to create something worthwhile.

then i get high again.

delete the part I'm working on because I realize that it's not going to work if It hasn't already, and come at it from a different angle.

If I don't like something I tend to delete the entire track, throw things at my computer and then start all over again from scratch. Rinse and repeat.

Thanks for some of your posts guys. I started something new in the end. May come back to the other one I got stuck on once i've finished with other projects. Im kinda glad it happened now, cos Ive made a track completely different and I am quite happy with the outcome so far. Everything happens for a reason I supppose.

I've noticed that when I decide to just do something different, I end up with the mentality of "My next song will be even better" so I'm more willing to just stop a project and start another. Hopefully you don't fall into that same mentality, sometimes you just have to keep banging away at the same track...

Not sure if you're doing this or not, but hang on to those older projects by making samples out of the riffs and basslines you make, you never know when they might come in handy in a later project.
