Serato can do auto-bpm analysis. Has for a while now. There is also a free program by Mixmiester for finding BPMs of tracks.

I was under the impression that, when using a Mac with Serato- that it wouldn't detect bpm. When I used Serato with my gateway laptop, I remember it used to work. Now that I've got it set up with my Macbook Pro, however, it doesn't seem to. I think it was an apple thread that I read that Beatunes is one of the only programs that works for this.

Any truth to this?

When I add a song to Serato and "build overviews"- it doesn't come up with a bpm readout.

Did you make sure you have the option checked? I too run on a macbook pro and never have had problems with it detecting bpm.

On the topic of Serato, can you actually mix with it without the hardware? I know it probably doesn't have a built-in mixer, but can you still play/cue the decks and adjust the pitch? If so, it would be useful to have to practice beatmatching when away from the decks.

The program for Serato is actually free. It's the hardware you pay for when buying Serato. So they'd be completely undermining themselves if they allowed you to mix without the box hooked up. The software allows you to adjust pitch internally for when the track is longer than 10 or 15 Minutes. Instead of the track just ending abrubtly, Serato will switch to internal mode seemlessly so you can mix out of the track.

You need the hardware to mix. However, you can analyze tracks and set cues and loops with only the software.

mix meister is a no-no. i used to use it to make little mixes to listen to ages ago. For a proffessional Djing program that has no midrange, difficult eqing and can only hold a beatmatch for a maximum of four bars, even if the BPMs are exactly perfect, i wouldn't trust it to guage BPMS. id rather physically count tbh

It's not mixmeister the mixing program. They have a free program that is just a bpm counter. From the short time I used it a while ago it actually did a good job.

No worries man. I myself was confused the first time someone mentioned mixmester as a bpm counter. If i recall it was fairly hidden on the site when I was trying to find it.

I have heard good things about rapid evolution. I think it also finds keys for harmonic mixing.
