How much are you willing to spend...

on your animal?

Does it matter how long you've had it, etc?

I'm asking because we adopted 2 kittens. One, in perfect health. The second, we were given sick. We already shelled out the $250 to fix the fact that we were given the cat FILLED with worms, and she nearly died. Then, three weeks later... she's sick again, the vet is convinced that she ate something and it's stuck in her intestines (plastic) and it's $400 for x-rays and $1200 for the surgery. She has a 105 degree fever.

I don't mean to sound cold hearted, but I haven't had the cat but for 6 weeks! Maybe I'd set up some kind of payment plan if there was a guarantee she'd survive, but when the vet says to me "she might not even make it through the surgery" my reaction is "so let me get this straight - $1600 for the cat to maybe not even live?"

Maybe if I'd had the animal at least a YEAR, I'd be less hesitant to shell out the money, but COME ON! If I had an extra $1600 sitting around, we'd have replaced the windows with it!

So you might ask what we decided to do? We decided to bring the cat home, call our friend who's a vet, and give her cat milk and see if she makes it through the night. She made it through the night, and her fever is starting to go down, so now we just think she maybe had a cat flu?

Ridiculous!

Pets are a member of the family. You wouldn't cheap out if your kids or your parents were sick.

my parents spent close to 10K on surgeries and cancer treatments for a dog of theirs over his 12 year life. I think it has to largely depend on ones means... 10K to my parents doesn't mean much but for some people even 1K would be too burdensome to justify.

actually over here with free healthcare, you kinda would, however pets are worth every penny you have. You make a promise to look after them and u then do so

Yes, normally, I agree. Normally I'm the first advocate of that. Only problem is... we were given a SICK cat. We already reported it to the news. It's just frustrating. We keep dropping all this money on this cat to stop being sick, and then, now to drop all that money without a guarantee it'll even fix it or she'll live?

Luckily, the vet was wrong and we didn't have to do all that - but still.

You risk the chance of having pets with problems as soon as you take them in. It's up to you whether you want the cat to live or die, but since there is a likely chance that it won't live anyways, ask how much they charge for putting it to sleep. I'm sure you'd save money that way and would not feel quite as bad. I would imagine the cat is feeling pretty miserable as it is right now, so maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to look into that option...

Oh, AND my parents spent 5k a few years ago on our sick dog, and they had to put it all on credit cards, and the dog died 8 months later, and my parents continued paying for it for 4 years.

Our dog that we had 10 years got cancer, and it cost us like $15k over her last year of life, and we kept shelling out the money, but on the same hand, it felt like we were torturing her. Keeping her alive even though she was in pain, because we didn't want to let go.

Well we brought her home and gave her cat milk (she's still really young, like 8 weeks) and wrapped her up and now she's doing WAY better and looks like she's gonna be just fine, thank goodness!

call me heartless and cruel, but how does one justify that kind of expense over an animal?

i suppose emotional attachments are priceless, but i don't think i would give an arm and a leg for a pet

Some people think that. I dont. A dog is a dog, not a human being. I would spend a limited amount of money if my dog got sick, but not 1000 dollars. Maybe 100 or 200 the most.
