Basically, whenever I turn on my laptop, i get an 'invalid system disk, replacethe disk, and then press any key' error.

There is no floppy in the drive, the BIOS tells me that the boot order is as follows:
- hard drive
- cd-rom drive
- removable devices
- network boot

I've already tried resetting settings to default, no luck.

Is a straight out format/XP reinstall the only option?

most laptops have two HDD, Check that it should be booting Internal HDD, otherwise id install windoze again, check fdisk if you still have a partition,

heh, fully legit copies of both actually.

I have a partitioned drive, and all the music just happened to be on the non system drive, so I just ended up formattging the system drive and left the files/data one alone. I did a full scan afterwards, but it came up with nothing, so if I had a virus the format must have taken it out.

i do the same thing.

It's useful, as if you're forced to format, you don't have to lose all the 'crucial' files (Aka music and porn).

If you don't have a floppy in the drive and it still gives you an 'invalid system disk error you have a bad h/d if you can put in your xp cd and try too boot off of that and reinstall your OS if you want to keep whats on that partition, if not then go ahead and nuke the h/d and start from scrach.

Already done that two or three days ago, as mentioned above.
