FS/SSL? is that the thing that lets you play turntables on the pc and save mixes and stuff? yeah i was looking at that... after getting turntables and the initial setup, that would probably the next best thing to get ~ they are expensive, but im sure they're worth it. that is probably gonna be my next purchase after the turntables. for some reason, i just dont want the cdj's.. maybe after i get good w/ the vinyl and am looking for new sounds and challenges, but i definitely wanna go vinyl. speaking of vinyl, i saw some websites with 45 new records for like 100 bucks. they have different packs with trance, techno, hard techno, latin and all of that.. do u think they are legit. vinyl4less.com was the site...

thanks
bisco

those vinyl packs are usually all the crap they couldn't sell singely.

Buy the records that you like. It'll help keep interest for you, don't buy somehting just because other people say you should, or because so an dso are playign it. Especially when you are starting, buy tracks you like.

For a starting DJ, 40 records is not bad... try to sell them after =)

Now that u mention vinyls...i was wondering bout smthng.
I live in canada and the only record store i kinda know of in toronto is "Play de record"...but their records r RIP OFF! They cost like 17 bucks almost each. I heard some TA members mention sites whre they sell for like $1 such as beatport...by the way...is it really 1 dollar in beatport and can i trust the ppl sellin it...or is it some kinda scam? Since we're talkin bout "wanting to b a dj" i think its good that we find out whre to buy records for a really cheap price as well...cuz i dont think any dj wants to spend hundreds and hundreds of cash just vinyl especially the ones startin off.

Beatport do NOT sell vinyls.

They sell digital downloads (ie, MP3).

17 bucks for a vinyl isn't a rip off btw. Thats what we pay on online stores here, you're looking at 25ish to buy one in an actual shop.

With regards to starting up being a DJ.

First look at the reason you want to be one.

Naturally music should be the first reason closely followed by wanting to throw a good party where people have fun.

Something you should consider is what medium you already have most of your current music on before you spin. If it's CD then you should atleast consider getting one CDJ.

It's a tough question with regards to decks though as in truth vinyl is suffering a downturn due to production costs.
The upside is that you will be learning the original art form and will get to know the basics very well, but don't rule CDs out as you may find that in time you could find yourself having to switch. Although, this will be easy if you already know the basics of mixing.

You really have to think about what DJing is for you. If you go clubbing what exites you, just the music or the fact that some guy is making the place go off their heads?

As I said, in the long run the medium is secondary.

Cheers
Nem

i get all my records from www.dancerecords.com.... tons of selection... cheap too, about $9-10 per record... I live in Vancouver so i get them shipped here and i usually buy them 10 or so at a time... cheaper than buying them from any store in van city... as for ur setup, i have all stanton equipment and im happy with it... id go for vinyl and not cd's... eventually ill go buy some cd decks but for now, and especially at the beginning id go for vinyl...

i dont want to dj in a club and i dont care if anyone ever hears me spin, i just want to do it for me. i love music and i think it would be a lot of fun... i guess you could just say this kid is just doing it for the challenge (if that makes any sense). like i said, i used to follow phish and now i follow the buiscuits (never been to a rave in my life). the buiscuits have dj's open for them quite often and i became interested in spinning after watching a dozen or so DJ's open for them.
